Idea or two for your advocacy project and its possible audience.
I think I will stick with my current Idea in the issue brief for my advocacy project. My Idea is to focus on the drinking that occurs in State college, more notably the drinking culture that surrounds Frats at Penn State. My audience would be to target the president of Penn State, as I believe that only he would be able to implement to policies that I am proposing. The issue does concern more people, however they do not have the ability to create a policy, though they could advocate for it.
Argument for whether you think Photographer as Witness: A Portrait of Abuse is a piece of advocacy and whether it is ethical.
I am not sure that this article is anything other than a piece that is trying to raise awareness. I’m Not sure what this piece was advocating, if it was even advocating anything at all. As for the question of is its ethical, I don’t that it ethical to take pictures of domestic violence for an article that you are being paid for, and try and justify not intervening because you where concerned for your own safety.
Your choice for your project seems like it’ll be quite easy to work with. After all, you’ve already written a 6-page essay on the topic. But as to your statement about “Photographer as Witness”, I find it to be advocacy in that it calls for women to start being more aware of the hypothetical threat this article poses.
I think you can do a lot with the idea for the advocacy project, I’d be interested in seeing how you put your own twist on things. I tend to agree with the photographer’s piece not really being advocacy. I suppose raising awareness can be a form of advocacy but in this sense I think it was missing the “how can you help” sort of thing and the part of the story where the photographer continued to take photos of the incident while it was occurring was insensitive.
I think that your advocacy project makes sense, as long as you make sure to appeal using more than just the facts you’ve used in your issue brief. Maybe include videos or pictures of the problems associated with binge drinking in your video (not sure if that’s allowed)?
I do believe that the photography series was advocacy but I agree that it was unethical. Although the photographer may not have felt comfortable physically stepping in, I think she could have acted to call law enforcement sooner. I don’t think these photos should have been released to the public.
I think sticking with your issue guide topic is a wonderful idea, you probably already have hundreds of thoughs about how you would advocate your ideas to the public. This will be a piece of cake, hopefully. As far as the Photographer as Witness I would argue that it is an Advocacy project, im not gonna write all my arguments here you can see them in my post. But what you mentioned about the fact that it seemed cowardly nott to interfere I think you brought up a good point about what is moral.
