Overview

Unlike traditional programming competitions, this contest allows you to use generative AI, like ChatGPT, to solve programming challenges. You will work in teams of up to three students at your PSU campus.

The top three teams will receive prizes, with $450 total for the members of the first place team, $350 for the second place team, and $300 for the third place team.

Contest Date/Time/Location

The contest will be on Friday, April 5th, as part of PSU’s AI week.

There will be welcoming remarks at 11:05 am at the Zoom URL: https://psu.zoom.us/j/92362363630?pwd=NVFrZksyeVJySVY4K0ZETFJqR0xkZz09. This Zoom URL will be used to answer questions during the contest.

The contest will then start promptly at 11:15 am, and you will access the contest via the url: https://www.hackerrank.com/psugenai24. Note that you will need a free HackerRank account to access the contest.

The contest will be held at the following locations:

  • Abington: Sutherland Building room 331
  • Harrisburg: Olmsted C15
  • University Park: Erickson Food Science 252

Contest Rules

  • To compete, you must be a current PSU undergraduate student.
  • You can compete in a team of up to 3 students. You cannot ask anybody else for help during the contest. Each team should use only one computer during the competition.
  • You can use (and you are encouraged to use) ChatGPT or other generative AI system to help you in the contest.
  • The contest will be hosted on the HackerRank platform.
  • There will be a Zoom link that anyone can use to connect during the competition, for general information and to get answers to specific questions.
  • These URLs will be provided in an email sent to student who have registered for the contest.
  • Each challenge is worth the same amount.
  • A team’s score depends on the number of test cases a team’s code submission successfully passes.
  • If a team submits more than one solution per challenge, then the team’s score will reflect the highest score achieved.
  • Teams are ranked by score. If two or more teams achieve the same score, then the tie is broken by the total time taken to submit the last solution resulting in a higher score
  • There is no penalty for multiple submissions

If you have questions about the contest or you are interested in helping to organize a site for your PSU campus, please contact Jeremy Blum (jjb24@psu.edu), chair of the Math and Computer Science Programs at Penn State Harrisburg.
