Overview

Have you wondered what makes the colors of fireworks? Or why some bugs can float on water? In this course, you will get to answer those questions for yourself through hands-on investigations!  From the comfort of your own kitchen, you will be  introduced to laboratory safety and good experimental technique, how to keep a proper laboratory notebook, interpret data, and write a formal report.  This course complements the lecture course (CHEM 110) by applying various concepts relating to spectroscopy, properties of liquids, intermolecular forces, chemical reactions, gases, and thermochemistry to laboratory experimentation.

How do I take a lab online?

Students will purchase a lab kit with supplies and equipment to complete laboratory investigations in their own home.  Access to running water and typical supplies found in a kitchen (salt, pepper, sugar, paper towels, etc.) are required.  Each week, students should expect to spend 3-5 hours completing an experiment, recording and analyzing data in their notebook, and answering post-lab questions.
