Business Roles

In the Eastern business world the ideals and practices that are held tend to be very different than the Western ideals that we are accustom to. For instance, the building of business relationships in China take a very long time, sometimes months or even years. Where here in the United States and some parts of Europe business relationships start strong from the start and often fade out quickly. It has been shown that the prolonged building of relationships leads to long lasting business partnerships. This is something that many Western businesses miss out on because they tend to have shorter relationships between business partners.

Culturally-Acceptable Traits in Business

A study has shown that in Eastern countries the leading characteristics for business partners coming from the west are not the skills and knowledge of the partner but their cultural adaptability, patience, flexibility and tolerance of others beliefs. These traits are what companies look for in their hiring if they have an intercultural relationship with the eastern countries like China. Many Oriental cultures rely heavily on the idea of respect and honor, and in many cases American workers are ignorant to this causing unintended disagreements. In Western culture, many people use an more direct approach when disagreements arise, while in Eastern culture people tend to stick to a more indirect approach of discussion, or they might just let the argument slide.
