The concept of Chinese food in many areas of the world is very different from the type of cuisine commonly eaten in China. Due to the Westernization of Asian cuisine, many cultures expect something quite different than the foods they encounter when travelling to China. While citizens in America and other Western countries are used to General Tso’s, Crab Rangoons, and Egg Rolls, the Chinese people include a variety of spices, vegetables, and cooking techniques in their colorful and delicious meals, snacks, and desserts.

A typical Chinese “dessert” consists of simple orange slices. Oranges are considered to bring good fortune. This is a much different tradition than the custom of the “fortune cookie” after a meal, which is in fact a purely Western invention and is not practiced at all in China.
