Issue Brief – The Rhetorical Situation, Exigence, & Audience

The Rhetorical Situation & Exigence

I plan to address the rhetorical situation and exigence in my issue brief by bringing up key issues in the ongoing presidential campaign and explaining how this policy could help improve these issues.  This will explain how this policy is relevant to the current times and addresses current hot issues in society, key components of the rhetorical situation and exigence.  I expect that addressing the rhetorical situation and exigence in the introduction of my issue brief will draw in the interest and focus of the audience.  Furthermore, according to U.S. News, climate change, health care, and trade and tariffs are three of the key issues to voters in the 2020 presidential election (“2020 Explained: Breaking Down the Candidates, Key Issues and Battleground States”).  Evidently, these are current, pressing issues to the American people. My proposed policy could help navigate these issues with effective mergers. As previously discussed, the ExxonMobil mega-merger has taken initiative in combating climate change through its environmental efforts. This demonstrates how enacting this policy could ensure that the government approves mega-mergers that will improve society by combating current issues through united forces.  In parallel to ExxonMobil, mega-mergers in the healthcare industry could work to improve upon issues and enhance the healthcare issue. Regarding trade and tariffs, potential mega-mergers could propose how they will unite forces to produce goods that we import and thus reduce reliance on other nations. With this progress, we would be less susceptible to trade wars and tariffs. Furthermore, U.S. News also reports the economy as another key issue on the campaign trail (“2020 Explained”).  Holding mega-mergers responsible for making progress will boost the economy and make sure the economy’s biggest assets do not become stagnant.

Audience

The audience of this issue brief will include the government and the public.  I will address the government in the issue brief by framing the issue with mega-mergers as one that can be improved through a further developed policy for approval.  Also, I will address the public by framing how this policy could facilitate enhancements in society and progress in fixing the issues that are most important to them in politics.

  1. This topic has a high relevance in many aspects of todays pressing news, so I would expect it will be easy to engage the audience. This will allow you to increase interest and introduce your issue and corresponding policy change. You will also have a wide audience that you will be able to appeal to.

  2. Other than coronavirus, the presidential campaign is definitely the most broadcasted event on the news. Therefore, I think this will be a great event to use in your issue guide especially with your chosen audience.

  3. You have a good approach in defining the importance of your issue in relation to the economy. The especially applies to today due to upcoming fears with such and the election. If you explain things transparently and in detail like you usually do, you’ll be successful. Just keep incorporating specific examples.

  4. I think discussing how this topic can help create innovations in society is a great way to get the public’s attention. American citizens are always looking for new innovations that could help improve their lives, and I think discussing this will really help open their eyes.
