SALTS Lab Radium in Groundwater

Road salts are essential to maintaining road conditions in climates with annual snow, however, they are known to cause a variety of adverse effects. We at Pennsylvania State University’s SALTS labs are working to better understand some of these effects – namely how salts can increase radium concentrations in groundwater. To do this, we are working to collect samples from residential groundwater wells across Pennsylvania to determine regions of the state where radium in groundwater presents an issue.

As well-owners, we know you are highly invested in the quality of the groundwater as it is your drinking water. Here, you will find more information on our citizen science sampling and resources to help you become more informed on the issues surrounding radium in groundwater as it pertains to Pennsylvania.

We appreciate your interest and cooperation and encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns.
