Now, let’s discuss what are the shortcomings of a Liberal arts degree, in terms of why it is considered to be ‘useless’. It was interestingg to see that ten years after graduation, median salaries of students who attended elite liberal arts colleges are far lower than – as much as 50% lower, in some cases – those of students who graduated from equally selective research universities, according to the Wall Street Journal .and data from the U.S. Department of Education. According to a study by Forbes, it may be wiser to get no college degree at all than to spend four years and hundreds of thousands of dollars earning a humanities B.A. They found that a striking 64% of hiring managers said they would consider a candidate who hadn’t gone to a day of college. At the same time, fewer than 2% of hiring managers said they were actively recruiting liberal arts grads. Now let’s discuss, what really makes a liberal arts education useless? Well it’s all the same reasons which make it so exceptional and divergent, or at least most of them.
Liberal arts programs provide students with a broad and general education that covers different areas of thought. However, these programs often do not provide a significant depth of experience and study in any one area. There may not be the opportunity to learn and develop any particular technical skills to a proficient level. Liberal arts graduates then find themselves without the entry-level skills required for professional jobs, since they primarily divulge in the development of what may be referred to as, “soft skills”. This includes courses that discuss the great instruction in cognitive ability, critical thinking skills, writing, and analysis and is without reference to any hard skills like computer programming,, designing any kind software or typing/writing.Even subjects that are based on post-modernist kind of theories, such as Gender studies, Sociology etc, are quite useless in terms of attaining a well paid job. Another example of an incessant major is one that prepares you for further education, such as political science, acting as a stepping stone for, perhaps, law school. It’s also a matter of how much demand is actually there, in the job market, for a certain area of expertise. It is well known that there can never be enough IT people in the industry, however law students are often left in the cold, due to the great competition in the field. Thus, the disadvantages of a liberal arts education include lack of preparation for employment. There in no development of technical skills and real-world experience, which means that liberal arts students may still need to learn basic job skills outside of their courses to be marketable and employable.
It is important to understand that a liberal arts degree is likely to be quite expensive, placing one in debt upon graduation and affording one a non-existent economic advantage in the job marketplace. It is known that in the 20th century, one could easily enter a graduate program after their bachelors. However, now graduate schools require work experience, which is hard to attain when employers don’t consider a liberal arts to be as significant as one with a technical background. It is a vicious circle, since funding for liberal arts education has also reduced, claiming STEM major are much more likely to be effective employees. The entire objective of a college education is to get a job in a related field and earn a salary that justifies the cost of four years’ worth of college tuition, liberal arts degrees are subject to a significant amount of public criticism for not being a wise investment. After all, compared to STEM majors, liberal arts majors on average make less and are more likely to be underemployed (in a job that doesn’t require a bachelor’s degree) right out of college. Therefore, the reason why many consider a STEM degree to be more valuable could be due to the focus on developing technical and professional skills that are directly applicable to career-related positions. The skills acquired in a liberal arts degree program may be considered more abstract and less valuable in the short-term after graduation.
It is quite essential to understand that a broad knowledge may seem as an effective skill set for life but in terms of employment, one must maintain a certain specific skill set, so as to set themselves apart. Besides, it was one thing to educate people broadly in the 16th Century when the extent of knowledge was relatively small. The explosion of the information age makes the Liberal Arts seem irrelevant. There is no way to broadly educate students in a world so overrun by information, knowledge and rapid change; it merely dilutes the essence of everything they learn. Therefore, it is quite essential to understand that, despite it’s holistic nature, a liberal arts education does not offer the required skills to it’s students. Not only that, their expensive nature makes it exceedingly difficult for graduates to pay off loans, since their jobs tend to be on the lesser end of economic value. Therefore, in today’s age and time, the nature of a liberal art degree doesn’t hold much in terms of a fruitful career, regardless whatever personal skills may be developed.

Despite having respect for the the liberal arts and the respective students that study it, I understand and agree with the point made in this post. With the current competition in the job market and the ever increasing need for jobs in the technology and engineering fields, it seems as though liberal arts majors are becoming some what “worthless”. However, I hate to have to say that as I believe that no one should be discouraged from majoring in their personal interest. Also, there is some evidence to show that these types of majors still hold some value. A study from Forbes has shown that people majoring in such areas as English, History, and Communications actually have a unique and diverse job pool (1). Yet, the catch is that these potential employees typically need to expand their qualities and skills through separate teachings and courses. I can understand why recruiters would tend to look past the resumes of a major in liberal arts as it known they do not have profound knowledge in a single subject. Also, for example, to be a top notch blogger, you could major in English, but also would have to take a course in coding to be a master at your profession. Also, it may not pay off in the end as pursuing advanced degrees in the liberal arts produce an average salary of about $63,000 (2). Meanwhile, students with the same level of degree in engineering see averages of about $106,000 (2). Even in the recent recession, 9.4% of liberal arts graduates were unemployed. It goes to show in a tight and competitive market, companies will only have a minute number of openings and will want to fill those with employees who have comprehensive knowledge in this subject (2). I do believe that liberal arts majors are important to our society with regards to mass communication and the history of our nation. Yet, today, these majors have become a second option to typical majors that offer bigger salaries and more opportunities. Perhaps, businesses could work on techniques to incorporate more employees with this knowledge. However, until then, there will be a social stigma surrounding the liberal arts and will tend to make potential students have some doubt in pursuing a major in this area.

Business grads run the companies and hire other business grads to run the companies.
To these business grads all other employees, including STEM majors and liberals arts majors, are fungible commodities, to be hired grudgingly and paid as little as possible.
Yes, and the world is in such awesome shape with all of those people ‘managing the world’ that have STEM, Economics, Marketing, or other specialist degree! Really!?!?! Do you really think that the only measure of the value of education is how much you get paid after you graduate? If everyone that graduated from a University/College with, whatever major, was taught using a liberal framework, we would not have half the problems of poverty, inequality, global warming, food shortages, obesity, mass anxiety, ‘fake news’ etc. These are all wicked problems that require people that can look beyond the immediate problem/symptom to look for causalities, systems and networks of problem and solution. Narrow majors have been proven to be absolutely useless at producing graduates that can think that way – even if they are paid/valued more than liberal arts graduates.
It is past the time for change
Richard, you are dead on. But in a world where STEM and QAnon jockey for prominence, what hope is there for the world of open minded thinkers, who may set us on a better course? Not to mention those useless colleges that would educate them.
Why would you go to college unless you want to get more money Richard? Even if you’re main intention is charity then you’ll have more money to help others. Or should charity be forced? You liberals complain that the rich don’t help when you all were stupid and didn’t get any money to help others yourself.
To enrich a persons mind. To broaden
The only disadvantages is the cost of the liberal arts school.

How is the scope in UAE with this degree? please inform me.
You need to take liberal arts courses nothing in your article is based on fact and your statistics are outdated. A liberal arts education (English, Communication, Critical Thinking, etc) would teach you the proper way to write an argument post. You only wrote about one side of the argument. This comes across as a very biased opinion based on nothing but your personal feelings. I am going to cite your article and refute 92% of what you have written with reliable, verifyed up to date facts and statistics. This article is a perfect example of why we need the liberal arts. Some people just do not have any idea of how to communicate to others thier personal views. I am not saying you do not have a right under the 1st ammendment to speak your mind but if you are going to do it on the internet you need to do it in a non offensive unbiased way. The first thing I would suggest is lose the graphic!
This is the best reply possible! I couldn’t agree with you more. A person who has graduated with a liner arts degree has a well rounded mind and can provide arguments to many topics.
The fact that this is poorly written (both in the weight of individual arguments and in grammar) is why we need the liberal arts. One sentence has “writing” listed as both something the liberal arts do and don’t teach. Brilliant. As someone else pointed out, basic research could easily disprove almost all of these points. The liberal arts can be credited for the creation and proliferation of things like government (hello, democracy) and critical services in public society. The real problem that folks like this author have with them is that they do not directly produce capital for the owning class, do not aid in never-ending privatization, and do not feed into the information technology revolution that aims to ultimately eliminate the need to employ human labor (and not for the benefit of the working class). Without the liberal arts there is no critical pushback to the economic hellhole we are falling into.
Much impressed by this article.

Hello. I’m currently studying the Liberal Arts in the UK. As part of my degree (being a first year), I have been able to choose an Argument Analysis as part of my Portfolio for my Summative. I am very excited to analyse this particular opinion piece, as neutrally as possible.
