The most recent ski trip that I have taken was to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. This ski town was different to any of the other trips I had been on before. By this point it wasn’t my first time snowboarding and I was actually able to snowboard unlike previous times. We flew into the Denver airport, and then did the long drive through the middle of no where to get to Steamboat Springs. Steamboat is known as being a place where professionals go to practice. You can see the huge jumps like the ones used in the Olympics on some of the mountains. The half pipes were way larger than I would have ever imagined. There was a really cute downtown area that my mom loved. I remember going to one shop that had cowboy boots and hats everywhere and in any color you could imagine. It was one of the best overall ski towns that I had been to. The hotel that we were staying at was insane. There were multiple hot tubs all outside that allowed for different groups to be out there at the same time. There was a gondola that ran from our hotel to the town at the bottom of the ski slopes, which made it very easy to get to the slopes.
The first couple of days we spent on the slopes, which was a lot of fun, but we slowly kept losing people to injuries. My mom was the first one down after my sister pushed her over coming off a ski lift. Her knee twisted weird since she fell on one foot while the other was still locked into her board. She wasn’t in any extreme pain, but she was lightly using crutches to make sure she didn’t mess it up anymore. A knee injury isn’t one that you can go into urgent care and have an easy solution for, so she decided to wait until we got back home to get it looked at.
My sister was the next person to go down. She is the only person in my family that skis, and she wanted to try snowboarding again because she started to feel left out. She booked a lesson with one of the instructors at the ski school there since the last time she tried to learn, she got annoyed with my dad’s way of teaching it to her. She was doing really good until her last run of the day. Since it was getting towards the end of the season, there was a lot of icy snow on the ground, and one of her edges caught the ice and made her fall. She fell back onto her wrist and hurt it pretty bad, so she got taken down the rest of the mountain by the toboggan. My mom took her to the urgent care, and it turns out she broke it, so they just put her in a big brace. All the injuries made it an interesting trip back home. They had to move my sister out of the emergency exit row that my dad always book because she wasn’t physically able to help if there was an emergency. She wasn’t too happy about it, but we all made it home safe and mostly healthy.
