Instructor: Dr. Joan Kelly Hall, Penn State University

Friday, October 15, 2021, 2pm-5pm (EST)

The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize newcomers to the field of conversation analysis (CA) to its utility as a research methodology for the study of L2 classroom interaction. The workshop will provide an overview of CA as it has been used to study the recurring actional sequences and their practices comprising L2 learning environments in diverse settings. Included will be detailed information on CA’s theoretical premises and its methodological approach to data collection, transcription, coding and analysis. The workshop will include hands-on, practical experience in reading transcripts using CA transcription conventions, transcribing video-recordings using real-world data from L2 adult-level classrooms, provided by the workshop leader, and basic training in developing an analysis. Prior to the workshop, participants will be provided with a topical reading list. The first part of the workshop will be delivered as a whole-group instruction, the second part will be devoted to small group work and there will be ample time for discussions throughout the workshop.
