A workshop entitled Connecting Language, Interaction and Education in Digital Environments (CLIEDE 2017) will be held at Penn State University, September 26-27, 2017. The theme of the workshop is the future of digital education environments designed to engage students in learning of written and oral skills in their native language, and to support teachers in offering learning opportunities that can benefit from automated language processing methods. Here language skills are taken to be a vehicle for, and reflection of, education in specific disciplines. Middle school is when the means of written and oral expression begin to diverge across disciplines. Thus for the workshop, we want to stimulate discussion about how to address diverse student bodies in middle school and above through novel digital environments. A desired outcome of the workshop is to identify promising directions and inspire new collaborations that take advantage of recent advances in natural language processing and related areas in ways that extend current research in education and learning design.
The workshop program will include a keynote talk by Marcia C. Linn, UCBerkeley, on integrating writing skills with science inquiry activities in an interactive, online environment; a panel discussion with audience participation; a few talks from presenters such as yourself; a session of lightning talks to introduce everyone; a large poster and demo session; a speed-dating session designed to stimulate ideas for collaborations. The intent of the workshop is to immerse everyone in many levels of active discussion.
