Limited Submission: NIH PAR-17-096 Jointly Sponsored Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Institutional Predoctoral Training Program in the Neurosciences

All current limited submission opportunities can be viewed at research.psu.edu/limitedsubs.

The Office of the Vice President for Research announces the launch of the NIH PAR-17-096 Jointly Sponsored Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Institutional Predoctoral Training Program in the Neurosciences competition. The internal submission deadline is April 19, 2019.

The purpose of the Jointly Sponsored Predoctoral Training Program in the Neurosciences (JSPTPN) is to provide strong, broad neuroscience training that will enable students to become successful research scientists at a time when the field is advancing at an astonishing pace. Neuroscience research increasingly requires investigators who can cross boundaries, draw on knowledge and approaches from various disciplines and levels of analysis, and apply this breadth of knowledge in novel ways to yield new discoveries about the nervous system. Moreover, the ability to conduct impactful neuroscience research requires strong foundational skills in experimental design, statistical methodology and quantitative reasoning related to study design, analysis and interpretation.

Call for Undergraduate Researchers: Fall 2019 Equity REU

The College of Engineering is pleased to announce a call for proposals for the fall 2019 Equity Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. This REU program supports Penn State undergraduate engineering students as they conduct research with Penn State faculty at University Park. Selected students receive a scholarship of $1,500 to complete their proposed engineering research project in conjunction with a Penn State faculty member(s) and his/her research team. The student requirements of the program include 10 hours of research per week, a scholarly paper, poster presentation, and attendance at monthly professional development workshops. While open to all students in the college, the program actively recruits students who fit the following criteria: students in first two years of study, female students, underrepresented racial minorities, change of campus students, LGBTQA+ students, veterans, and equity allies.

Faculty looking to connect with students can post a project on the program application site.

Please contact Erin Hostetler (ErinH@psu.edu) or Cindy Reed (chr10@psu.edu) with any questions about the program.

Workshop: Active Learning for Busy Skeptics and True Believers

The Leonhard Center will hold a workshop titled “Active Learning for Busy Skeptics and True Believers” on Tuesday, April 30, from 9:30 AM–4:00 PM in 202 Hammond Building.

Active learning has consistently been shown to be more effective than traditional lectures for promoting students’ learning, motivation and academic performance. Despite this overwhelming research support, instructors often face significant barriers to adopting active learning in their own classes, including concerns about how to adopt active learning in highly technical courses, about excessive preparation time and content coverage, and about student resistance to new teaching methods. This hands-on workshop is designed to address each of these concerns.

The workshop will introduce participants to quick and simple active learning techniques that have been shown to be effective in STEM courses and that require little preparation or class time. In addition, it will provide instructors with guidance and practice using research-based strategies that have been shown to reduce student resistance to active learning. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed an action plan to for successfully adopting active learning in their own teaching.

The workshop will be capped at the first 25 to register. A wait list will be kept in case of cancellations.
