Funding Opportunity: Diagnostic Excellence Initiative

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity as a part of its Diagnostic Excellence Initiative. The initiative aims to reduce harm from erroneous or delayed diagnoses, reduce costs and redundancy in the diagnostic process, improve health outcomes and save lives.

The foundation is soliciting novel ideas and approaches for developing new clinical measures to improve diagnosis, specifically targeting three major categories of disease: acute vascular events (such as stroke and myocardial infarction), infections (such as sepsis and pneumonia) and cancer (such as lung and colorectal cancer).

The application process will involve a multi-phased competitive process. Ultimately, 3-6 grants will be awarded for $250,000 to $500,000 each for work done over 12-18 months.

Applications will be accepted online beginning June 17, 2019, and are due no later than August 2, 2019.

Call for Applications: Jefferson Science Fellows Program

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine administers the Jefferson Science Fellows (JSF) program. The JSF is open to tenured, or similarly ranked, faculty from U.S. institutions of higher learning who are U.S. citizens. The application period opens in early August and closes at the end of October. After successfully obtaining a security clearance, selected Jefferson Science Fellows spend one year on assignment at the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as science advisers on foreign policy/international development issues. Assignments are tailored to the needs of the hosting office, while taking into account the Fellows’ interests and areas of expertise. Following the fellowship year, Fellows will return to their academic career but will remain available to the U.S. government as an experienced consultant for short-term projects.

Summer Writing Workshops for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The University Fellowships Office is hosting writing workshops for students applying to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. These workshops are meant to provide guidance on crafting a competitive application, feedback from fresh eyes, a scheduled time for revising your work, support from other students working through the same challenges, and a deadline for motivation.

We will be meet in 216 Boucke on July 1, July 15, and August 5 at 5:00 PM and continuing throughout the fall semester. Students will need to have a draft to work on at each workshop and are therefore expected to upload a copy of their current draft to our Box folder a day before the workshop.
