Today I attended a deliberation by Ross, on the topic of should whether or not student athletes should be paid. I came into this deliberation with a clear standpoint on how I felt about the topic. My stance on the topic was that of course students athletes should be paid especially if they can afford to pay them at the University that they play for. I felt this way because they do a lot more than the average student and while yes, it is there choice they do not have the time to work and play a sport and then should be entitled to some sort of compensation since they bring in money to the school.
During the deliberation I learned about how many complications there really is when it comes to even thinking about paying a student athlete. There are so many contributing factors that goes along with this subject. For example, do you pay all the players on the team, do ALL students who play sports on campus get paid, and are they already highly compensated? All of those are really relevant questions that was discussed at the deliberation.
The deliberation went really well every one came with a different mind set and was there ready to be engaged and argue their points.Ross did an excellent job facilitating the whole deliberation and keeping things going. Also, he was really good at playing devils advocate throughout the deliberation. Even though it can hard to play both sides because you may have a clear stand point. Ross was able to do that, Which brought out the best in the conversation.
My stand point now on whether student athletes has changed but not in the way you may be thinking. I went into this with a clear stand on the topic and left out not knowing what to think or what side I am now on. I believe that, that mean it was a really great deliberation. I say this because if you can provide a substantial amount of information on both sides of the case and leave your guest now confused on which side to take you truly did a good job. I overall really enjoyed this deliberation more than I thought I would. I went in with the thoughts of extra credit on my mind from Ms.patia and left out with a lot of information and a lot to think about.
