European Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Program

Deadline: June 7, 2017  (12:00 noon, EST)

In the 2017-18 academic year, EURIAS member institutions offered a total of 48 fellowships in Western and central Europe, Scandinavia, and Israel.

Eligibility: Open to all fields of the humanities and social sciences. Junior fellowships are open to early PhDs with 2-9 years of full-time research experience.

Award: Stipends are in the range of € 26,000 for a junior fellow. Exact amounts depend on the host institution’s internal rules and national legislation.

Center for Chinese Studies Research Grant – Taiwan

Deadline: May 31 of each year before the year in which funds intended are to be used

Eligibility: Doctoral candidates and Postdoctoral researchers conducting research in the field of Chinese studies. The research should be undertaken in Taiwan, and be focused mainly on Taiwan or Chinese studies. Center of Chinese Studies (CCS) provides assistance with research expenses, research materials, liaison with universities and research institutions, and use of CCS facilities, etc.

Award: One months to one year. Travel expenses reimbursed upon arrival; monthly stipend (sliding scale from doctoral candidate to full professor); use of CCS facilities.

Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Deadline: Rolling. “At present, you must assume it will take up to ten months before you receive a decision.”

This fellowship “allows you to carry out long-term research (6-24 months) in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host.”

Eligibility: PhD received within past four years; publication record; prior agreement of chosen academic institution.

Award: € 2,650 per month, which includes a partial health insurance subsidy. Fellows may also qualify for travel expenses, intensive language study, and/or family allowances.

Association of Asian Studies

Deadline: Feb, 1, 2018.

AAS sponsors several grants, and provides a web clearinghouse for non-AAS grants and fellowships.

Highlights:

  • The China and Inner Asia Council of the AAS (CIAC) is soliciting applications for awards of up to $2,000. Dissertation-level graduate students and scholars with special interests in China, Taiwan, or Inner Asia are invited to submit proposals.
  • NEAC programs in Japan studies include grants of up to $2000 for research within the US, and up to $5000 for short-term research in Japan.
  • NEAC programs in Korea studies offers grants of up to $1500 for research travel within the US and Canada, or up to $5000 for research travel to Korea.
  • Translation Project of the Southeast Asia Council offers translation grants from $750-$2000 for translation of texts from a Southeast Asian language in to English.

Paris Institute for Advanced Study: Fellowships

Deadline: March 1

The Paris Institute for Advanced Study welcomes applications from high level international scholars and scientists in the fields of the humanities, the social sciences and related fields, for periods of one or two semesters. The IAS will host around 20 guest researchers, allowing them to work freely on the project of their choice. The researchers will benefit from the scientific environment of the Institute, and will have the opportunity to create contacts with researchers in the academic institutions of greater Paris.

Eligibility: Junior scholars having the status of postdoctoral researcher, or holding a position in a university or research institution; and having a minimum of two, and a maximum of nine, years of research experience after the PhD.

Award: Housing, monthly stipend, and round-trip ticket to Paris.

RD Mullen Research Fellowship

Deadline: April 3, 2017

All projects must centrally investigate science fiction, of any nation, culture, medium or era.

Postdoctoral research fellowship: up to $3000.  “Candidates must have received their PhD degree 2 years or less from the date of applying. Also eligible are those who have essentially completed but not yet defended the dissertation. Applicants who hold (or are contracted to begin) a tenure-track position are not eligible. The relation between the new research and the topic of the dissertation should be clarified in the proposal. The Committee understands that the two are likely to be related, but the additional research needed for the post-doctoral project should be explained.”

Dissertation research fellowship: up to $1500.  “Research must be in support of a dissertation topic that requires archival research. The proposal should make it clear that applicants have familiarized themselves in some detail with the resources available at the library or archive they propose to use. Projects with an overall sf emphasis, other things being equal, will receive priority over projects with a more tangential relationship to the field.
