China Educational Association of International Exchange Teach in China Program

Teach in China is looking for recent graduates with an interest in teaching, education and/or China for 12-month teaching placements in China.  Successful grantees will be placed at a Chinese school, from elementary to the university level, in locations across China.  Benefits for those selected for the program include: Roundtrip international airfare, local transportation, monthly salary, visa, insurance, and housing. Applicants who have TESOL certification or 2 or more years of teaching experience are highly desired. Those without TEFL/TESOL certification will be required to go through a training leading to being certified TESOL/TEFL instructors. Program start dates are either February or August.

Eligibility: Candidates for CEAIE Teach in China opportunity will have a strong interest in China or in a career teaching, particularly teaching English to speakers of other languages. Eligibility requirements for this opportunity are:

Must be a native speaker of English.
Must be a citizen of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom or the United States of America.
Must be between 20 and 55 years of age.
Must have a bachelor’s degree or above.
Preferred: TESOL certification or two years of teaching experience.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

The Center for Global Studies is pleased to announce the competition for FLAS Fellowships for the Pennsylvania State University. FLAS Fellowships are authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and are administered by the U.S. Department of Education. They assist undergraduate and graduate students in achieving competency in selected foreign languages and conducting research in related international and area studies.

Deadline: Evaluation of applications will begin on February 1, 2018, but all applications will be considered until funds are fully allocated.

Eligibility: Students in all fields of study are welcome to apply. Languages eligible for Penn State’s FLAS Fellowships are Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian. To be eligible to apply for FLAS Fellowships, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Be accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a FLAS-granting institution and in a program combining modern foreign language training with area/international studies or research and training in the international aspects of professional and other fields of study
  • Be enrolled in a program of modern foreign language training in a language for which the institution has developed or is developing performance-based instruction
  • Show potential for high academic achievement (based on GPA, class ranking, or similar measures determined by the institution)
  • Additionally, the selection committee will give priority when awarding fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate financial need as indicated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  To be considered under the priority category of demonstrated financial need, students are required to complete and submit the FAFSA form to the Student Aid Office by the FLAS deadline.

CARA Summer Program-Medieval Academy

A limited number of stipends are available for graduate students and particularly promising undergraduate students participating in summer courses in medieval languages or manuscript studies. The stipend will be paid directly to the student and must be used to offset a portion of the tuition cost. The awards are contingent on acceptance into the program.

Blakemore Freeman Fellowship

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one academic year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia. Eligible languages are Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Thai, and Vietnamese. The Blakemore Foundation makes grants for study only at specific language programs. Please refer to the current list of approved programs.

DEADLINE: The grant application cycle begins July 1, 2018 with a deadline of 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on December 30, 2018.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Be pursuing a professional, business, technical or academic career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language.
  • By the start of the grant, have a college undergraduate degree.
  • Be at or near an advanced level in the language. The minimum requirement is three years of study of the language at the college level, either through classes taken in university or in combination with study-abroad language programs.
  • Be able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time intensive language study during the term of the grant. Grants are not made for part-time study or research.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

DEADLINE: The application for the Summer 2019 CLS Program will open in Fall 2018.

ELIGIBILITY: The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks participants from a variety of fields, backgrounds, and career paths, with the goal of building a cadre of Americans who speak critical languages at high levels in government, business, arts and culture, science and engineering, health and medicine, education, research, and other fields.The CLS Program is a nationally competed award open to all eligible U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in every field.

AWARD: The CLS Program covers most of the costs of participating in its overseas institutes, including:

  • International and domestic travel between the student’s U.S. home city, Washington, D.C., and the CLS Program site
  • Related costs for a mandatory pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C.
  • Visa fees, language instruction, room, board, program-sponsored travel within the host country
  • All entrance fees for program activities
  • U.S. academic credit issued through Bryn Mawr College
