We celebrated Constitution Day the past four years by holding a trivia contest using clickers and questions from the civic portion of the Naturalization test, challenging our students to beat the national pass rate (currently 91%).

We passed out Constitution booklets, provided by our local state representative, as invitations to the event and posted questions on the library door for a few days preceding the event, offering a small prize to the first student each day to correctly answer the question.

A Speak Easy is an opportunity for conversation in a relaxed, informal setting for anyone who wants to improve their public speaking and learn something in the process. Our first Speak Easy came about as a result of a conversation with several of the international students who had been attending our events. After talking about the difficulty many of us have pronouncing nonnative names, we decided to do an event which we called Pleased to Meet You! The event was set up in a speed-dating format, where we took the time to meet and learn about several of our international students. We also discussed some of the ideas presented in the following article: Hong, L., Fox, R. F., & Almarza, D. J. (2007). Strangers in stranger lands: Language, learning, culture. International Journal of Progressive Education, 3(1), 6-28.

We invited students to come in costume to watch and discuss Dr. Phillip Zimbardo’s TED Talk, The Psychology of Evil, on Halloween Day.

In November 2014, one of our campus history professors, Jon Price, discussed the upcoming midterm elections, offering his predictions on key races nationwide in an event we titled The Price is Right? Four years later, he gave a repeat performance for the 2018 midterm elections.

The following year, we invited archivist and curator of the Alice Marshall Women’s History Collection at Penn State Harrisburg to present Connecting with the Past to focus on our Teaching International theme of gender.

Faculty members who traveled together on numerous Penn State trips held a slideshow during two days in April 2017, with photos from their trips showing continuously in the library.

A panel of Penn State York women discussed their interesting career paths during our What’s My Line? event celebrating our campus Career Week and Women’s History Month.

We partnered with our campus veterans group to host a panel discussion for our Connecting with our Veterans event to celebrate Veterans Day.

Since we have such a large number of students on our campus from China, we celebrated the Chinese Mid Autumn Festival, held in the fall when the moon is brightest and fullest. Since this is a time traditionally spent with family, we wanted our Chinese students, so far from home, to join their Penn State family to celebrate with traditional moon cakes and riddles. We held the event outside from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and, although it was a cloudy evening and we couldn’t see the moon, the astronomy professor was there to provide fun moon facts. This event was also part of our Teaching International initiative.
