The theory that the Earth is flat has actually been around for a long time. In fact, it first emerged in the 19th in England. However, it has recently gained more and more popularity over recent years.
People who believe in this theory are often called “Flat Earthers” and are part of a larger organization known as the Flat Earth Society. The Flat Earth Society was created by Samuel Shenton in 1956 under the name of the International Flat Earth Research Society (IFERS). The aim of this society was to research the Flat Earth and educate children and even adults before they were corrupted into believing that the Earth was spherical. In the 1900s, however, the society was at a decline after its headquarters in California lit up in flames. Following this event, in 2001, was the death of Charles K. Johnson who took over this group in 1972. In the later year of 2004, the group was revieved as a website by Daniel Shenton (who is of no relation to Samuel Shenton) so that way the group could have a more permanent platform as opposed to that of a building.
Modern technology now has many different platforms that this group can use such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Flat Earthers are able to use these platforms to spread their ideas and build a stronger following.
Now, Flat Earthers don’t actually believe that the Earth is just a flat plane like a map would be, they actually believe that the Earth is a shape of a disc. They think that at the center is the Arctic Circle and that Antarctica surrounds the rim of the disc. According to them, NASA employees actually guard the Antarctica rim as to ensure that no one climbs over it and falls off.
Speaking of NASA, Flat Earthers do not trust nor believe NASA. They think that NASA and the government fabricate satellite photos in order to ensure that everyone believes in a spherical Earth. They think that all photos of the globe are photoshopped. Some deeming evidence for this is that NASA has even said that they can’t obtain a complete photo of the Earth in one go and that the photos of Earth that we have are actually just millions of photos compiled together to get their best estimate of what Earth is. Flat Earthers also happen to believe that GPS devices in planes are rigged in order to make pilots think that they are flying in a straight line around a spherical Earth when they are actually flying in circles above a disc.
It is reported that nearly 200 people join the Flat Earth Society each year. Will you be one of those 200? Or will you stick to what you’ve been told all your life?
