Several COPT fellows attended SSIB 2015, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior in Denver, Colorado from July 7 – July 11, 2015. Each student gave us a recap and reflection on her experience. We will be featuring one student per post as part of this series.
Brittany James, MS
Q: What was the title of your presentation?
A: Disinhibition is associated with the pattern of weight loss and regain in a 1-year trial of portion control strategies
Q:What were the main points of your presentation?
A: The findings of this weight loss study indicate that improved control over eating as measured by disinhibition could provide an indicator of who is likely to be successful at losing weight and preventing regain.
Q: What is something you learned while at SSIB?
A: One of my biggest takeaways was learning the power of bouncing ideas around with other researchers, many of them leaders in the field. Hearing their thoughts on our work gave me new perspective on how to approach our research questions. It also set up the potential for future collaboration in some cases.
Q: How do you hope your general program of research will contribute to the field of ingestive behavior?
A: I hope our research provides additional incentive to identify individual differences that affect success in both weight loss and weight loss maintenance, particularly those that can be intervened upon. Correctly assessing and building interventions around these differences could offer tailored, personalized programs and substantially benefit weight outcomes for a larger number of individuals.
