§ 12:00PM: Transfer to Costa Pajaros / Playa Blanca for afternoon at the beach. Stop included at Los Mangos to pick up boxed lunch and allow time for students to change their clothes.

§ 1:30PM: Visit to Costa Pajaros / Playa Blanca

§ 7:15AM: Depart on full day private coach with English speaking guide for hospital visit

§ 8:00AM: Clinic Visit: Visit to the local clinic in Tilaran to continue to work with the ATAPs

§ 12:15PM: After visit, lunch included at Aroma Tico Restaurant (one soft drink per person included)

§ 1:30PM After lunch the group will begin transfer towards La Fortuna near Arenal Volcano. On our way to La Fortuna, make a quick stop on the shores of Lake Arenal for sightseeing and take pictures.

§ 3:30PM: Arrive at hotel in La Fortuna and hotel check-in

§ 4:00PM Walk to downtown La Fortuna for shopping. Upon completion of shopping, get back to the hotel.

§ 6:30PM: Meet and transfer for group dinner at Rancho Perla restaurant (one soft drink per person included)

§ 8:00 PM: Transfer to the hotel, where the group can enjoy the pool.

§ 7:45AM: Meet at the hotel parking lot (Please bring a backpack with change of clothes, swimsuit and a plastic bag for wet clothes).

§ 7:50AM: Depart on full day private coach for clinic and cultural visits

§ 8:00AM: Clinic Visit: Visit/meeting at the clinic in La Fortuna. After visit, if there is a spare time, we can continue shopping in La Fortuna downtown.

§ 12:00 PM: Group lunch included at Rancho Perla (one soft drink per person included)

§ 1:00PM: After lunch, depart for cultural visit

§ 1:30PM: Cultural Visit: Walk through the rainforest and experience the hanging bridges (entrances included)

§ 4:00PM Transfer to Baldi Hot Springs (The place provides towels, paying a $10 deposit that each participant must pay. The deposit will be returned against the return of the towel. Participants can leave their personal belongings on the bus; but for their convenience, the place also offers rent of lockers, for a cost of $6 dollars each -if you wish and your backpacks are small, you can share 1 locker with another student and divide the cost of the rent-).

§ 6:30 PM: Change of clothes to go to the restaurant. The dress code is informal, but swimwear is not allowed. The entire group must be in the restaurant at 6:55 p.m.

§ 7:00PM: Group dinner at Baldi Hot Springs restaurant (buffet dinner). After dinner, the participants can put on their bathing suit again and continue enjoying the 25 different pools of the hot springs.

§ 9:30PM: Changing clothes again and meet at lobby to go back to the hotel.

2014 Itinerary

DAY 1. Sunday, November 30th, 2014. Following arrival at Juan Santa Maria International Airport, outside of San José, students will be met and transferred to hotel. Following dinner, there will be a general orientation session regarding Costa Rica. Overnight in Heredia (near San José). Country Inn and Suites by Carlson. Dinner provided.

DAY 2. Monday, December 1st, 2014. Early this morning after breakfast we will visit the Children’s hospital. Once there we will tour the facilities and have a meeting with one of the doctors who works on this famous health care center, known for being one of the best on its class in Latin America. Following lunch we will visit the Public Women Hospital, to have a tour on the Gynecology and obstetrics Service. At this hospital, the group will meet a gynecologist who will tour us around the facilities and share their experiences. After that, we will go to our Hotel, and receive one functionary of Ministry of Health of Costa Rica, who will give us a little talk of how the Ministry of Public Health works and what is its role on the Costa Rican health care system. Overnight in Country Inn and Suites by Carlson. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided.
Day 3. Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014. After an early breakfast we will depart to Alajuela for famous Poás Volcano. Poás is known for having one of the largest craters of any active volcano on earth. While here, we will also have a chance to hike in a very unique high altitude rainforest near the volcano. After this, we will travel to Doka Estate coffee farm and make a tour, where we will learn the whole production process as well as the processing of coffee, the harvesting, the processing plant and the roasting of the grain. After lunch, we will visit the Public Hospital of Alajuela, to have a tour on their facilities. At this hospital, the group will meet with one of the administrators, who will talk about the work, projects that this Hospital has implemented to become one of the best in the country, and share some experiences with us; then, we will continue our journey to Las Juntas, Guanacaste. Overnight at Pueblo Antiguo. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided.

DAY 4. Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014. This day we will join the local health workers “ATAP” (in English TAPC: Technical Assistant of Primary Care) of the Abangares Clinic. We will break into groups to visit houses with the health workers. At the end of the day, we will go on-site clinic. When we return from home visits, some of the personnel will give us a tour through the facilities of the clinic. After finishing our day of work at Las Juntas, we will say goodbye and travel to Tilarán, Overnight at Hotel Guadalupe. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided.

DAY 5. Thursday, December 4th, 2014. Following breakfast, we will go to the Tilarán Clinic and join their ATAPs to visit houses again. After lunch we will continue the work with the ATAPs. Overnight at Hotel Guadalupe. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided.

DAY 6. Friday, December 5th, 2014. This morning after breakfast, we will travel to Monteverde, on the way; we will stop to collaborate with a local service entity to donate implements for a service project. When we get to Monteverde, we will meet the director of the little local clinic of Santa Elena. He will give us a tour of their facilities and he will speak about the challenges they face every day working as doctors in a remote area. Following lunch, the group will be transferred to the Canopy Tour, The Monteverde Original Canopy Tour consist of 15 Zip line cables and 18 platforms. In this tour the visitors use safety harnesses made of the best climbing gear available, this experience will allow the participants to enjoy the cloud forest from a different perspective. Overnight at Country Lodge. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided.

DAY 7. Saturday, December 6, 2014. This morning we will go on a suspension bridge hike in the rain forest, we will also visit a hummingbird gallery. After a late lunch we will drive back to San Jose, and overnight in Heredia (near San José). Country Inn and Suites by Carlson. Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided.

DAY 8. Sunday, December 7, 2014. Transfer out and departure.

The in-country cost to students is $1,994. This includes all in-country transportation, food and lodging. There is an additional Program Fee of $315. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from SJO airport, food in the airport and the country exit tax. Scholarship funding is available at the Penn State Global Programs website (http://gpglobalea.gp.psu.edu). Many students may qualify for the PA Commonwealth EA Application.

Interviews will be conducted and spots on the trip awarded on a space available basis as soon as applications and the $250 trip deposit are received. All applicants must supply references. Applications will be accepted beginning March 3rd. The final deadline for applications is March 31st. Please make checks payable to The Pennsylvania State University and put Costa Rica HPA 401 deposit and your last name in the memo line.

Day 1 – Sunday, Dec. 1.  Following arrival at San Juan Santamaria (SJO) International Airport, students will travel directly to the San Jose’s Country Inn and Suites. Students will be met by their host, Celeste Newcomb, at the hotel. Dinner will be provided. After there will be a general orientation session regarding Costa Rica. Overnight in San Jose.

Day 2 – Monday, Dec. 2.  Early this morning following breakfast, we will visit and meet the Minister of Public Health. Two other meetings are also scheduled at the Women’s Hospital and at the Children’s Hospital, respectively. Overnight again in San Jose (Country Inn & Suites).

Day 3 – Tuesday, Dec. 3.  After breakfast, we will travel to Las Juntas. On the way, we will visit the Poas Volcano and do a coffee tour. We will be staying overnight at the Heliconias Hotel in Las Juntas.

Day 4 – Wednesday, Dec. 4.  We will visit the local clinic in Las Juntas in order to learn about the work of ATAPs (Technical Assistants to Primary Care) and other preventive health labor performed here at the local clinic. Overnight in Las Juntas.

Day 5 – Thursday, Dec. 5.  Following breakfast, we will continue to work in the local clinic with the ATAPs. After lunch, we will travel to Monteverde. On the way, we will be stopping to do a service project with a local service entity. Overnight in Monteverde Country Lodge.

Day 6 – Friday, Dec. 6.  In the morning, we will visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest. In the afternoon, we will visit the clinic in Santa Elena. Overnight again in the Monteverde Country Lodge.

Day 7 – Saturday, Dec. 7.  For our last full day, we will do a canopy walk through the rain forest and experience the hanging bridges in the morning. After lunch, we will head back to San Jose for a farewell dinner. Overnight in the San Jose Country Inn & Suites.

Day 8 – Sunday, Dec. 8.  Transfer out and fly home.
