Gayle is not in every episode of Bob’s Burgers because she is Linda’s sister and a side character. However, whenever she does come in, it is very obvious she struggles with mental health issues. Anytime Gayle is in an episode, it revolves solely around her mental health and how the Belcher’s can try to help her out.
The other characters I have done so far have been diagnosed by many other people who watch the show, but Gayle is one that no one seems to agree on. Some says she might have some form of autism (I don’t think this is the case) while some think its just basic depression and anxiety. I believe that she suffers from something not as common, BPD or borderline personality disorder. BPD is described as a condition that makes it extremely hard to regulate emotions. In one episode Gayle is trying to get one of her MANY cats a role for a commercial, but she randomly changes her mind and starts sobbing over her cat possibly being stressed out. Gayle’s mind switched from being super excited and happy over the opportunity for her cat, to bawling her eyes out because her cat looked at her funny. This is a clear example of poor emotional regulation because of how drastic and quick the mood changes, this can be seen in many people with BPD as well.
Another common thing in patients with BPD is unstable relationships and this is often due to the differences in moods that they can go through. Gayle worked at a museum (she can’t keep a job more than two shifts; which is another sign) and she thought this man was trying to steal art. Normally, someone would call security, but not Gayle; she decided to take matters into her own hands. She proceeds to tie the man up in a back room and call Linda saying she “got the robber.” Linda knows she has to talk her out of it and successfully does. After all of that, somehow, her and the man she tied up ended up going on a date; showing how quickly her relationships with people, even strangers, can change.
