Foxy Mama

With the quickly approaching video project due date (and winter break), I really don’t think many will have a chance to read my passion post for this week… That’s fine. To accommodate this lack of usual readers, I have decided to save a really awesome post for next semester and substitute in a brief one about a personal favorite oil paint artist. She’s pretty interesting, but definitely not at the same caliber as others I have posted… But anyway,  relax and enjoy. This is Jen Mann.

When I discovered her sometime in the 10th grade or so, she was just finishing her collection Fera, a period where she explored human relationship our instinctive animal side. She combines female faces with animal counterparts to mirror this inseparable relationship with wild passion. The result is beautiful. Something that definitely caught my eye at the time and continues to fascinate me. Since that time she has explored many other facets of humanity through her paintings, including spirituality and icon beauty’s negative impact on women’s psyches.

“Winter Pack,” 2009.

Although I am not AS big of a fan of these later works, her most recent 2012 collection Gathering of the Psyche regained my interest. In these pieces, she examines the idea of an intangible soul within each human being. To do this, she uses a white on white approach to create a washed-out effect.

“Self Reflection,” 2012.

It is just so interesting to me how many artists undergo such powerful stages that dictate an entire line of work. Although I haven’t been able to do any of my own work in a while, I hope that I, too, could someday develop a worthwhile and meaningful collection like these! Incredible!

WIP – Another Update On Our Video Project

Sooooo… where are we on our video project?

Well, our voiceovers are BOMB, thanks to Jake and Olivia’s brilliant vocabularies. Our images still remain to be a work in progress as it is difficult to find public domain photos to match the spoken topics of our video. The history of the controversy we collected is pretty solid, now we just need to trim our interviews and sort out what clips are relevant for proving our point for the conflicting issue. We need to ensure that all sides, especially those of students and teachers/authority of the topic are equally represented. We also need to continue narrowing our information for time’s sake. It is now coming to our realization how short, yet how long, 7-9 minutes is, for it is a long and tedious process to piece together the video, yet time is easily spent only covering the cusp of the issue and not its deeper aspects…

Everyone is pulling their weight in our group… Ben is doing all the iMovie editing and keeping all the files we find together (and providing occasional comic relief). Olivia is keeping our group on track and  is composing written copies of the voiceovers that Jake then records. My job is to find visuals (i.e. footage and still image) and also to draw corresponding images for the dialogue–you know, to add some artistic flair to the usually boring stock image video project.

We’re on a great track! Hopefully we can continue our strong teamwork and pull everything off in time next week!
