With the quickly approaching video project due date (and winter break), I really don’t think many will have a chance to read my passion post for this week… That’s fine. To accommodate this lack of usual readers, I have decided to save a really awesome post for next semester and substitute in a brief one about a personal favorite oil paint artist. She’s pretty interesting, but definitely not at the same caliber as others I have posted… But anyway, relax and enjoy. This is Jen Mann.
When I discovered her sometime in the 10th grade or so, she was just finishing her collection Fera, a period where she explored human relationship our instinctive animal side. She combines female faces with animal counterparts to mirror this inseparable relationship with wild passion. The result is beautiful. Something that definitely caught my eye at the time and continues to fascinate me. Since that time she has explored many other facets of humanity through her paintings, including spirituality and icon beauty’s negative impact on women’s psyches.
“Fox,” 2009.
“Dance by the Light of the Moon,” 2009.
“Winter Pack,” 2009.
Although I am not AS big of a fan of these later works, her most recent 2012 collection Gathering of the Psyche regained my interest. In these pieces, she examines the idea of an intangible soul within each human being. To do this, she uses a white on white approach to create a washed-out effect.
“Self Reflection,” 2012.
It is just so interesting to me how many artists undergo such powerful stages that dictate an entire line of work. Although I haven’t been able to do any of my own work in a while, I hope that I, too, could someday develop a worthwhile and meaningful collection like these! Incredible!
