Texas Fertilizer Explosion

The small town of West, in Texas, has been hit hard by a fertilizer explosion.  The area within five blocks of the explosion has been effected including 50 to 60 houses.  Several people have been killed and nearly 200 wounded.  The wounded are being treated very quickly.  This is a terrible loss.20130418_texas-slide-HW3Y-articleLarge

There has been no sign of criminal activity yet, investigators and still searching.  This has been a hard week for America with the Boston bombing and now this.  It is such a hard thing to hear that lives are now gone.

All we can do now is try and learn about what went wrong and try to prevent these things from happening again.

The Gettysburg Battlefield

The Gettysburg Battlefield is located less than an hour from my home, so I’ve been there quite a few times.  It is a really cool place to drive especially is you are looking for a little american history.  There is almost a infinite amount of things to learn and see at the battlefield.  This is a good place to visit for people of all age ranges.  As a child I remember climbing all over the rocks at Devil’s Den and having a blast.DevilsDen1 I now enjoy driving around the various roads and learning about the different events that happened leading up to the war.  Over 620,000 people died before the Civil War was over, and I think it is a very important part of american history that all citizens should know about.  Every year there is a battle re-enactment which is quite a site to see if you ever get the chance. 070598j0119

I have gone to this several times, but every time I am amazed.  The fields of Gettysburg tend to get fairly hot during the summer months, and these soldiers were wearing woolen uniforms and lots of heavy gear.  It amazes me that they ever had enough strength after marching through all the heat to actually fight in a battle.  This is a really cool place to visit and a really cool topic to learn about. Enjoy!

Dark Lightning

I was recently going through the news when I saw an article on Dark Lightning.  This caught my attention because I had never heard of such a thing before.  The article is very fascinating. If you are interested in science I would recommend you read it here:

http://news.discovery.com/earth/weather-extreme-events/dark-lightning-who-does-it-hurt-130410.htm

Basically the article says we have known about dark lightning since 1994 due to a NASA spacecraft, but we don’t really know much about it.  Apparently within the electric field of a thunderstorm electrons move very close to the speed of light until the collide with some other atom in which case they emit a gamma ray.  These gamma rays are the “dark lighting”.  Scientists are trying to figure out how harmful this lightning is to humans and especially pilots who may be struck may times while flying.  As of now not much about there harm is known, but it is suspected that we should not be worried.  The lightning seems to be not very strong and fairly spread out from.  If you were struck by the lightning you would most likely not notice it.  The only thing you may have a chance of seeing is purple light, but it is not likely.  In the article they bring up a good point; it has been 250 years since Benjamin Franklin performed his experiment with the kite and key, yet there is still much to learn about electricity.

Blue Ridge Parkway

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9atN1ZEh_h4

The Blue Ridge Parkway starts in Virginia and leads down into the hearth of North Carolina.  It is a one of the greatest roads I have ever been on, with a scenery and driving experience unparalleled by any other.  This road is very close to the Tail of the Dragon, which I have written about before, but this road in itself is a riders delight.  As you can see in the video, it is a great place to take a motorcycle and really have a great day of riding.  The smooth curvy mountain  roads make for a nice relaxing ride.  The scenery is includes many places to pull over and fully enjoy the wide open views.  Much of the road is at a fairly high elevation where you can see for miles on a clear day.

Blue Ridge ParkwayThe road is very long, long enough that you could plan out several riding trips and only see a few sections.  If you are looking for a good place to take a nice relaxing drive, take a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Lake Lure

North Carolina is a great place to vacation, especially when you are looking to escape to some warmer weather.  Lake Lure is one place that I have been before that was really cool.  The lake has lots of pretty views and not only is there a nice beach but you can also get a dinner cruise.  It is a really cool place to go with the family and have a good time.  This is the lake that was used in the filming of Dirty Dancing.

Nearby is a great place to hike called Chimney Rock.  It is a really cool hike, or elevator ride if you don’t want the exercise.  The hiking paths are really narrow and rocks, it is really cool to hike your way up.

The view from this point is amazing.  No words can describe it well, but I can say that you will probably need to take a good long break if you chose to hike up.  This is definitely a worth while trip, and make sure you explore the roads around the lake.  This is a pretty mountainous area with lots of good scenery and views of the lake.

Hard Economic Times

The United States has been going through some hard times since the recession hit in 2009, and employment isn’t getting any better.  CNN released a report showing a decrease in hires from previous months, but if you looked at unemployment rate you would probably not have expected to see this:

The unemployment rate is dropping, but the number of people looking for jobs is also decreasing.  Since the recession and job cuts many people who were once in the labor force have been discouraged and are now no longer looking for jobs.  In fact, according to CNN’s article the labor force in the U.S. right now is merely 63.3%.

I believe this calls for a drastic change in Fiscal policy.  We need our citizens to be more encouraged to work in order to increase our money flow and to enable economic growth to quickly recover form this recession. Current policy is not offsetting the trends created by the recession.

Upstate New York

Upstate New York is probably one of the most beautiful places you will ever drive.  It is a very broad area, but you could probably drive the whole thing and never get bored.  If you love the water the I do you should definitely take a trip to lake Champlain.  This is a very pretty area with lots of mountains and wonderful views.  Be ready to have your ears popped many times though because you will be going through a lot of elevation change.  If you have a choice, definitely go during the fall when the leaves are changing.  The view is simply amazing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

If you get bored of the lake there is a great state park near by that is also full of great views and mountains.  It is a perfect place to drive around and just relax.  There are lots of smaller lakes scattered all throughout upstate New York and most offer great views.  I’d highly encourage that if you are passing through or just want somewhere to drive that you take a stop in upstate New York and take in some of the views.

Carbon Dioxide for Food

Researchers at the University of Georgia have recently mutated microorganisms so that they can digest carbon dioxide. This is huge!  The organisms have also been able to absorb carbon dioxide with hydrogen gas to form an acid needed for the production of acrylics.  Scientists have been studying the effects of the massive carbon dioxide output of humans for a while now and this is one way that we could control the levels of pollution so that we don’t have to worry about our pollution anymore. The full article can be found at:

http://www.counselheal.com/articles/4585/20130328/recycling-carbon-dioxide-usable-fuel-near-future.htm

This doesn’t solve the fact that petroleum fuels are  going to run out, but it could definitely offset some of the negative effects that have already taken place.  I like that fact that we are able to mutate organisms in a way that makes them more useful to us, but it is also a little weird to think about all the possibilities it opens the world of science to.  I found this article extremely interesting, hope you all enjoy it.

YouTube

YouTube has reached its eight anniversary and has over one billion viewers.  This is really cool to me and I think other YouTube users will agree that YouTube is one of the greatest websites ever.  The company claims that the have hit the one billion viewer mark and say that if they were a country, they would be the third largest company in the world.  It is kind of shocking to me to think about how many use YouTube, but it also seems completely reasonable.  YouTube is one of the greatest tools on the internet, from instructional videos on anything you can imagine to viral videos of just ridiculous things.  I use YouTube just about everyday and probably several times on most days.  The site was designed to allow anyone to post videos and I believe that it is this setup that has allowed it to grow so quickly.  This company has had great success and it is well deserved.

All information can be found in the article at: http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation/Horizons/2013/0321/YouTube-Eight-years-in-and-1-billion-people-strong

Pennsylvania Grand Canyon

This week I decided to talk about a place that you can drive too, and even though the drive itself is pretty cool, most of the good scenery has to be seen on foot.  The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon is not far from State College and it is an amazing place to spend some free time.  This is a great place to go with just some friends or even the whole family.

Grand Canyon

www.paroute6.com

As you can see in this photo, the view is amazing, and this picture isn’t anything compared to seeing the canyon in person.  There are lots of things to go around the canyon such as hiking and trail riding. One thing that my family enjoyed when we visited was a horse drawn wagon ride through the base of the canyon.  There were lots of interesting facts about the canyon that you wouldn’t expect.  This is a place that is worth visiting several times.  There are several locations with nice overlooks and benches where you can just sit, relax and enjoy the view.

“The Holy Grail of Mars”

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/14/space-europe-russia-mars-idUSL6N0C6D7Q20130314

http://amyshirateitel.com/2012/09/06/reducing-recycling-and-reusing-on-mars/

I recently found an article about a new mission that is being planned that could lead to huge advancements for space exploration.  Europe and Russia signed a joint deal for a Mars mission in which a apparatus will be sent to mars that can drill into the surface 2 meters and take a sample of dirt so that scientists can analyze what sort of substances exist on the surface of mars.  They have already discovered many interesting things about Mars, but this is the next step.  I think this is pretty interesting, but I’m not sure this will help us establish anything big for the future.

Personally I think we should do more research other planets and trying to find ways to make space travel a more viable option.  It is nice to know all these little details about the planets that are close to us, but wouldn’t it be much cooler to discover a planet that already has everything essential for human and trying to find a way to get there.  Or even finding another planet that has living organisms would be awesome to me.  I am glad scientists are doing this study, but by the time I start working in this field, as I hope to, I think we will be doing much greater things with our research.

Miami to Key West

If you aren’t tired of Florida yet there is another drive you should take.  This one will give much larger views and for me is a bit more breathtaking.  This week I’m going to talk about the drive from Miami to Key West.  I took this trip probably around 5 years ago and it is one that I will never forget.  My family and I were on a vacation in Florida and decided it was a great time to visit Key West.  We had heard lots of stories of how beautiful and excited this place was.  We all piled in a car and started driving.

key west

As you can see the road connects a long chain on islands that lead to Key West.  It is the long series of bridges and little towns that make this trip awesome.  There are many wide open views where you can see right through the crystal clear water to see fish swimming, along with big ships and little fishing boats.  The ocean isn’t the only cool part about the trip.  Once you get to Key West you won’t be disappointed.  They are so many things to see I couldn’t even begin to make a dent in the list, but some of my favorites are getting a picture with the southernmost point in the United States and getting dinner at Jimmy Buffet’s Margarita Ville.

From One Brain to Another

ratpicture from link at bottom of page.

Scientist have found a way to connect brains via a physical link so that one brain can talk directly to another.  They performed this using two lab rats in cages fairly close to each other and found that the rats were communicating.  They then replicated the experiment to two rats that were located 10,000 miles apart.  This is a huge advancement in technology and they believe that they will be able to connect millions of brains together to work on problems where all brains could help come up with the solution.

Personally this is scary, this seems like it could lead to some Matrix like stuff that I am not that fond of thinking about.  I am happy with using to internet to connect brains, this just goes a little overboard.  There are probably some big advantages to being able to use a physical link such as speed and better understanding, but is this really necessary?

This discovery is mind blowing to me in many ways.  I would of never dreamed of being able to connect my brain to someone else’s.  I am amazed at the rapid discovery of so many new technologies of our time.  Let me know what you think of this.  You can read the full article at the link below:

Alligator Alley

aligator-alley

http://www.kirkf.com/2009/06/21/floridas-interstate-75-sr-84-why-do-they-call-it-alligator-alley/

Also known as Everglades Parkway is a road that goes from Naples on the west coast of Florida to Weston on the east.  Most of the road is in the everglades and when the road was being built people said cars would never be able to drive on it, it wold be an “alligator alley”.  This is how the road got its name and even though there are hundreds of alligators around and sometimes on the road, it is still used frequently.  This is the most straight, flat road I have ever seen and you might find yourself falling asleep if it weren’t for alligators lining both sides of the road.  this is a sight I don’t think you will able to find anywhere else. There are canals on both sides of the road and the alligators like to lay right on the side of the road in the sun beside the water.  My first time on this road when I was only a few years old left me in awe.   Alligator alley

Here is a picture of the road from Google maps.

It just so happens that I have family at both ends of alligator alley so when we visit we often use this road.  There are alligator farms and lots of tourist type shops to visit.  One time I got to hold a baby alligator, it was a really cool experience.  Check it out if you get the chance.

Tourists on Mars?

http://www.space.com/19901-mars-space-tourism-dennis-tito.html

Dennis Tito a multimillionaire  is funding a mission to Mars that will be a round trip of 501 days.  I think this is awesome.  With NASA pulling out of space missions I think it important that space continues to be studied by private enthusiasts.  Space is very interesting to me because of the infinite mystery that is creates.  It is fascinating to think of what could be out there and even though most of space is far from reachable with our current technology it is still important that we explore the things that are close.

http://www.space.com/15243-spacex-quest-rocketry-holy-grail-space-exclusive-video.html

This video is really interesting if you care to watch it.  Basically private funds are being used and space technology is growing very quickly again.  The key thing we need to develop in order to be able to do many space missions is to get a reusable rocket. If we create reusable rockets we will be able to fly many missions much cheaper than before and this will allow exponential growth in the space industry.  I think this is really inspiring and I am hopeful that one day we will all get the chance to go to space or maybe even mars and beyond.

The Tail of the Dragon

This week we are to going to one of the most intense places to drive in the United States. The Tail of the Dragon is an 11 mile stretch of route 129 in North Carolina.  There are many brochures and videos of people drive the roads and claims are made that is it “the number one motorcycle and sports car road is the US,” according to tailofthedragon.com.

tailofdragon

I came across this road last summer with my family while we were going to visit my sister who lives in Georgia.  It just so happens that at the time my dad and uncle had rented Harley’s and this was a perfect place to ride.  This is not a drive for the feint of heart, it is very twisty and you may get tired of speeding up and slowing down unless you love driving.    Many people crash on this road, probably because they try to go a little to fast but none the less it is pretty dangerous.

This video is pretty long, but if you watch a minute or so you will get a good idea of what the road is like.  The scenery isn’t bad either.

Side note: This is not going to be an enjoyable ride if you are in a van full people

Ron Paul, Policies Aside

This is my interpretation on Ron Paul’s character, and what I think of him as a person, without considering any of his political views.

I have a lot of trouble believing politicians, and I have good reason to.  If you watch any debate where people are able to ask a politician what they will do about a particular topic, you are most likely not going to get a straight forward answer.  Watching the debates for the recent election was comical for me.  Someone in the audience would ask a question and the politicians either rant about some barely related issue or just skirt around the question all together.  I often question if the politicians even know where they stand on certain issues or if they are just trying to make whoever asked happy?  Or are they saying what they believe or are they saying the beliefs of whoever is shoving money at them? Either way this is where Ron Paul comes in.  This man tells his honest opinion, and I believe that it is honest because he will stick with it even if it isn’t what the people don’t want to hear.  He has also said that he does not take money from lobbyists, and to me this shows that he is speaking his own mind and not someone else’s.

Have you heard about bills that are hundreds of pages long because every little group wants to tack on their own clause to help them out, well I don’t agree with it, but more importantly I don’t think any politician should be subject to the same acts.  This is especially true of someone who is going to run the country.  I feel that honesty is one on the most important things in a leader and I think that Ron Paul in one of the most genuinely honest politicians you will find.

I linked Ron Paul’s Farewell Speech at the top. It is a good representation of how he speaks, and you will see he gets right to the point.

Skyline Drive

These week we are going south, but not too far, Virginia.  Skyline Drive is one of the roads that I traveled on many times when I was young and it is a place that I will never forget.  This road is about 100 miles long and follows the crest of the blue ridge mountains.  It has many over looks and places to pull over so you can fully enjoy the view.  The mountain ridge is very high in elevation and if you stop at one of the over looks you can see for miles and miles.  The views are great. The wildlife is very abundant in these forest.  I have never been on this road and not seen deer wandering the edges of the roads.  I have also seen several black bear while driving.

Skyline

This road is very twisty and has a lot of elevation change.  I zoomed in on Google maps and highlighted a portion of the road in the picture above to give you an idea of wild the road is.  It is a nice drive in a car, but if you have a motorcycle I guarantee you will love this ride.  The cool breeze and humid mountain air and the smell of honeysuckle is all you need for a good ride.  When I was younger my family would rent motorcycles and  we would drive up skyline drive and go camping for a few days.  I have had a lot of good times driving on this road and camping in this area.  If you are interested in the outdoors I would highly recommend you check this place out someday.

Sticks and Stones May….Be Fun to Drive On

Michaux

On this road trip, we will go somewhere much closer, Michaux State Forest.  This is a huge state park in south central Pennsylvania which covers over 85,000 acres.  I’ve spent countless hours driving around this park with my Dad just enjoying the scenery and the gravel roads.  This is one place you could drive around all day and never have to take the same road twice.  There are some major roads that run through the park, but to see the best scenery you have to get a little mud on your tires.  The scenery from one end of the park to other is completely different.  Towering hemlock forest with mountain laurel and creeks can be seen in on one area, but when you go to another you may find dark pine forests with fern plants covering the ground, or in another you may find giant boulders protruding from the ground that overlook lakes.

The whole park is full of great scenery, but that is not the only thing that has made me go back time after time.  The roads are extremely fun to drive.  They are mostly gravel or dirt, and they are not very well groomed with pot holes, rocks, and tire ruts scattered throughout.  What makes them enjoyable is the twisting and turning, the uphill and downhill, it is a drivers delight.  It is a nice break from the smooth, mostly straight roads I normal drive.  There is a lot more to do here than drive cars, there are many dirt bike, ATV, snowmobile, horse, and hiking trails.  This is a nice place to go with your family or friends.

Mercedes, Coolest Man in the World

http://www.youtube.com/user/mbusa/featured?v=oPNr0_6MnDo

This is the best Superbowl commercial because it changes the predispositions of this particular company.  People often believe they will have to sell there soul to the devil to be able to afford a Mercedes Benz, which is what this commercial jokes about, but by the end we find out that you can buy a brand new Mercedes for less than $30,000.  So not only does this commercial have some humor with showing you how awesome you will be when you own a Mercedes, but it also is a great way of changing peoples minds about the prices of Mercedes.  I think this is the best Superbowl commercial because it is going to get this company a lot of business.  A lot of the commercials at the Superbowl are funny, but they don’t necessarily make people want the product being advertised.

It also good to consider what makes a good commercial. Is it humorous, or pragmatic? Is it short or long? Humor is almost always necessary if you want to keep a viewer from changing the channel, but if it is only humor is the viewer really interested in buying the product?  Mercedes does a good job a drawing a line where humor gets there product attention, then they use fact to make people want to spend there money.  There is also the factor of how long to make the commercial.  Even if a commercial is funny no one is going to be willing to watch for more than a minute or two, but on the other hand if the commercial is too short it won’t leave a lasting impression and may not provide enough information.  Overall Mercedes has done a great job creating a fine balance between all of the criteria for a good commercial.  They get my vote for best commercial this year.

Rocks Between Your Toes

Arcadia Maine

We will begin our road trip in the northern most state, Maine.  I went on a road trip there a couple years ago, and it had some of the most memorable landscape I have ever seen.  One place in specific that I would recommend that you visit if you ever get a chance to go to Maine is Arcadia State Park.  If you look at the map above, courtesy of Google maps, you will see the gently winding road that follows the coastline of this little peninsula.  The road isn’t overwhelmingly windy and doesn’t have a lot of elevation change, but it does have a view that may keep you distracted.  The view is incredible, from the bright forest to the dark blue waters to the wild blueberries growing all along the road.  The water is much darker than the water on the shorelines of Delaware or Maryland, and the beaches are very different.  One thing that I think is really cool is that the shoreline has no sand, it is all rocks.  They are not sharp, gagged rocks, but rocks worn smooth from years of ocean water pounding on them.

Once you’ve completed the loop there are plenty of other things worth venturing to.  Cadillac Mountain is nearby and it is the highest point on the eastern shoreline from all the way up in Canada all the way down to Brazil.  The view it gives is very worth the short hike to the top.  There is also a little town called Bar Harbor with plenty of gift shops to fulfill your souvenir needs.  Don’t forget to get some of the local lobsters while you are there.

Road to Happiness

Tibet road

This photo is beauty in all of its simplicity.  Driving down a road with landscape like this is what I love to do.  I often search for places with great scenery to drive, and a fellow enthusiast, Coolbiere A., has found one of these places on a drive down a Tibetan road.  The slight darkness of the photo gives  very soothing feel along with the very airbrushed look of the clouds and hillsides, but the car on the road is surrounded by light, which creates a feeling of happiness and warmth.  The rolling hills gently push your view down to the car, exactly where I want to be.  I hope that someday I will be able to go to this place, drive down this road, and see this in person.  To me the simplicity of this photo is what makes it appealing.
