Bing bong what’s up! I am about to crash because all I had for lunch was a milky way and a bottle of water. If only there was someone back at my dorm waiting for me to come home with food prepared… if only I had a househusband… speaking of househusbands, this week’s manga that I’ll be going over is Gokufushudou, or “The Way of the Househusband.” It’s a fun and lighthearted slice-of-life comedy that’s easy to pick up, drop, and pick up again at any time. Personally speaking, I read a few (20) chapters out of the blue randomly, really enjoyed it, then forgot to continue reading it and lived about my life as one normally, until out of the blue I decided to pick it up again, once again really enjoying it. So yeah, really nice casual fun manga yes yes, let’s talk about that.

Story
So yeah, to put it bluntly, there’s this guy called Tatsu and he’s just living his life as a househusband supporting his wife. This on paper sounds like the most boring story one could come up with, but certain elements of the characters add a spice of sorts to the story and make it what it is. For one, the husband is an ex-yakuza*. One day back when he was a gangster, he decided to finna dip the gang and got married and became a househusband or something. For why he decided to do a whole 180 on his life, I have no clue. The manga has yet to answer and with how long it’s been running alongside the lighthearted tone of the manga, I doubt they plan on to either. The main source of humor in the manga comes from creating a wholesome lighthearted ending from a misunderstanding derived from Tatsu’s previous yakuza life.
To be completely honest, there is 0 plot to this story, as each chapter is its own mini-story with its own start and end. Though characters that are introduced in past chapters appear again in later chapters frequently, more on that in the next section…
Characters
The characters in this story are all stupidly simple. Like, stupid stupid simple. There’s Tatsu, the main character who’s an ex-yakuza househusband, there’s the wife that’s a career woman but raves over kid shows, there’s the side buddy who’s broke and naive but kinda low-key high-key simps for Tatsu, etc. Though simple, the way in which each chapter plays out through the characters interacting with one another and their environment makes the entire series a light and enjoyable read. You know pretty much everything there is to know about a character in a chapter or two, which immediately reduces the required amount of brain cells needed to keep up with the plot. What’s more, even if there is something that you don’t really understand in the plot, just move on to the next chapter. Boom new chapter bing bong all is solved!
Art
Text: We brought in some hired muscle, real pros, for this kinda situation, but… They ain’t proven themselves to me yet. You think you’re up to it? Huh? WHRRRRRRRRRR. Ooh… Alright. I’ll that territory to you… You think you can skip corners, punk? Finish the job properly! That’s where the most dirt piles up! Don’t you fuckin’ pussy out! Get in there!
The art isn’t going to expand your mind and allow you to see all 17 dimensions of the universe by any means, but it’s not bad by any means. My favorite thing about the art, is how it uses lighting and framing to create humorous anticlimactic situations such as the one above.
But yeah! Super fun manga that’s easy to pick up and keep up with! Would highly reccomend, yadda yadda etc. OMG CLASS IS CANCELLED TOMORROW I’LL MISS YOU ALL WHILE I’M SLEEPING
*Yakuza are the Japanese equivalent of the mafia or gangs
