Is failing worse than never trying, and why do some people give up before trying?

So, this week has been extremely crazy. The question I’m going to answer may be a little basic so I apologize. Despite that, it still is a pretty good question, and all of us should ask ourselves this whenever facing a challenging situation. Which is worse: failing or never trying? I also want to answer why some people give up before trying.

First of all, it is 100% my opinion that never trying is worse than failing. This applies to every aspect of life to include things ranging from sports to relationships to even school. If you never try, then you will never know. Giving up before beginning is rooted in fear, and it is not healthy to live that way. I know that this is a lot easier said than done, but in life we must take chances. We must take chances even at the risk of failure. Thinking back, there have been several instances in my life where I never tried out of fear of failing. While I do not necessarily regret my decisions, I do wonder what would have happened if I would have taken that risk or chance. Since being in college, I have realized that I cannot continue to live my life in fear. Never trying is always worse than failing. If you fail at something, it becomes a life lesson you can apply to future situations.

Even though most people know that it is better to try and fail than to never try at all, they still refuse to take chances. Why is that? According to an article written by knoji.com, “Generally, people give up because they feel that no matter how hard they try, they can’t get these simple things that drive every creature on earth, or that if they do get them, it wasn’t worth the effort.” Im sure everyone has given up on something, whether it be big or small, just because that didn’t feel like doing it anymore. It is human nature to take the path of least effort. This is something that is programmed into our subconscious. I actually read that in a book titled Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. This does not mean that we are all inherently lazy, but just that we have a limited amount of effort that we can put towards something. We automatically exert the minimum amount of effort possible in a given situation and once we reach our max, we cannot move past that. This is what leads to giving up in certain situations. We just try to exert too much attention and effort onto something that we cannot. Another thing that ties into giving up is learned helplessness. This means that after repeated failures of something, subjects tend to lose all hope and not try at all. This can apply to our lives because if someone constantly fails at something, it is very easy for them to give up future attempts even though it may be possible to succeed. In some cases, we must over some that self-doubt and risk it all anyways. To some, failure is not an option, but honestly, it is better to fail than to never try.

  1. So I’m reading this because I don’t believe in myself and I feel like a failure and basically want to give up on writing music. I almost found this inspiring except the amount of type-os made it so choppy that I no longer found it very credible or even worth reading. Rewrite this article, because if you want to inspire people to keep trying you may want to try putting in the same effort your preaching to your readers into your own article. By the end of this I felt cliche and like I had waisted my time reading from someone who didn’t even care enough to proof read what was supposed to be a helpful piece of literature. Thanks but no thanks

    1. don’t stop what your doing continue if no one cares it’s ok do what you like dont listen to anyone no matter what they think about you be strong .
      stay strong
      i purple you

  2. This may be true if you’re 20 and try to figure out what you want to do with your life. But when you spent years trying to achieve something, anything, and you failed every single time, maybe it’s time to accept the fact that you’re simply a failure? At some stage it hurts less to just quickly give up and forget about the whole situation, than to add another pathetic failure to the long list of your life achievements.
My new life motto is “know your place”. Every time I have a silly idea to try something new, I repeat it to remind myself that whatever it is i wan to try, it’s not for me.
