The Commonplace Advertising of Streaming Platforms

Everyone enjoys watching their favorite TV shows, listening to their favorite music, and so forth. These popular streaming platforms such as Hulu, Spotify, and Pandora are just a few examples of companies using a commonplace to persuade their viewers. Each of these platforms are known for including advertisements during the streaming of the music or show as well as giving the customer the option to remove the advertisements for a higher price.

These platforms use the advertisements within their application to persuade their customers to buy the more expensive version of their app. The companies are actually using other companies advertisements to persuade their customers which is extremely well thought out and frankly, pretty genius.

Let’s take Spotify as an example. Spotify is a a great music streaming application that gives its listeners the option of searching the songs they want to hear and the ability to create their own playlists. Now the app has two options. There’s the option of creating a Spotify account for free while using a certain amount of “skips” meaning that the listener only has a set number of times that they can skip songs. This free version of the app does come with advertisements every few songs however, advertising not just other products, but also advertising its paid service to get rid of ads and give listeners unlimited skips. Spotify is using the constant advertising to not only advertise the other companies and their products, but advertise their own paid service through the other companies’ advertising.

Streaming services like this use advertisements to persuade, or honestly, annoy their customers into purchasing their service. The commonplace that these streaming services are using is an originally non-traditional method of persuasion which is becoming more and more popular across these fast-spreading companies.

  1. The streaming platforms you mentioned are definitely commonplaces for advertisements. In this new wave of technology and online platforms, advertisers have taken advantage of inserting their ads within the service they provide. I switched to Spotify premium to avoid the constant ads every thirty minutes, to have unlimited skips, and to create my own playlists. Streaming services tend to be successful in their pursuit to convince people to purchase their services, especially when they are advertising the benefits of doing so on their own platforms. The timing and location of these advertisements are great rhetorical choices for the seller.
