RCL 4:

This is a bumper sticker that portrays strong anti-war sentiments. It does this by reaching to the readers’ emotions and their sense of logic.

Firstly, it calls the viewer to think about the fact that Jesus would never bomb anyone. Jesus was particularly pacifistic and was known to say to his followers to turn the other cheek. For example, when Jesus was being arrested after Judas betrayed him he told Peter and the other apostles to stand down after Peter had cut off the ear of a Roman soldier. Jesus would never bomb another country, however, in today’s day and age it is simply not possible to just turn the other cheek without being seen as weak. This might lead other countries to see this apparent weakness and exploit it.

I think that it is funny that the designer of the bumper sticker chose Jesus to be the face of his anti-war sentiment. There are so many other examples of people that are explicitly anti-war and anti-violence. However since so many people know, respect, and relate to Jesus and know his teachings the designer thought that it would draw the most peoples’ attention.

I think that this bumper sticker certainly draws attention to itself in many ways, it is funny because of the idea of Jesus bombing anybody. Also it makes sense that Jesus wouldn’t want to bomb anyone. However, I think that there is a large majority of people who might find this sticker to be offensive to their religion. This is due to the fact that Jesus died for his people and now there are others using his image to spread messages that disrespect His image.

To conclude, this bumper sticker certainly has a strong argument that not many people would agree with. However, it is quite effective in making the viewer think about how wrong it is to bomb another country. The use of Jesus as a figure of credibility is smart and effective, but it could also offend many others.
