Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder for the ISS (International Space Station-based mission):
Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder on the International Space Station (TIGERISS) will provide the most comprehensive data yet on ultraheavy Galactic cosmic rays (UHGCRs). TIGERISS fulfills Pioneers program goals to: advance priority science, advance technology development and develop future leaders. The mission will answer key science questions posed in the Astro2020 Decadal Survey report to transform our understanding of the Galaxy’s grand cycle of matter. TIGERISS builds on the balloon-borne TIGER / SuperTIGER technology, with improved charge resolution and range, and adjustments to meet International Space Station (ISS) payload requirements. The mission will develop leaders for future space-flight missions by mentoring 17 early-career team members, many in leadership roles. At the end of the five-year mission, TIGERISS’ transformational measurements will increase understanding on how the Galaxy produces and distributes the elements.
