Cruising can be daunting. There are so many different lines to choose from. Each one offers different benefits. Not every line will fit your needs. Before picking out a cruise line, it is important to know what things you are looking for.
Once you know those things, here are 5 Things to Know about Disney Cruise Line.
All the Ships have Fairy Godmothers
Currently, Disney has four active cruise ships. They are the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and the Disney Fantasy. The original two sister ships are the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder. Sister ships are ships that have the same floor plans, but the theming of them are different.
But Disney wouldn’t be Disney without a little bit of magic! Each ship has a fairy godmother.
- The Disney Magic has Patricia Disney, former wife of Roy E. Disney.
- The Disney Wonder has Tinker Bell.
- The Disney Dream has Jennifer Hudson.
- Finally, the Disney Fantasy has Mariah Carey as it’s fairy godmother!
Hoping for another fairy godmother? Don’t fret! Disney currently has another ship- the Disney Wish– under construction and two more in the planning stages!
Your Dinner Servers stick with You the Entire Cruise
One great thing about Disney is how much emphasis they put on being ‘part of the family’! With a rotational dining schedule putting you in one of the three different main dining restaurants everyday, you would expect to have different servers until you return to that same restaurant. This isn’t the case! Cruisers are assigned a table number that they will sit at in every dining room, and their wait staff are the same. The servers have the same rotation as you do, so if you have any allergies, dietary restrictions or preferences you do not have to explain it at every meal!
They are the only Cruise Line to use Fireworks at Sea
Disney is the first cruise line to offer fireworks over the ocean. While they are not the only cruise line to ever do so as Norwegian had a brief stint from 2013-2015, they are the only line that still does them. The fireworks are often set off during various deck parties that are hosted on ship depending on the itinerary. Worried about the wild life? Not to worry! The fireworks set off by Disney are actually made of a biodegradable material that Disney calls “Fish Food”.
Some Sailings are Themed
While almost all cruises have a Pirate Night, some special ones will have extra themes! Some themes are seasonal, location based, or are random in their occurrences. Disney is known for having Marvel and Star Wars sailings where guests will have the opportunity to have character meet-and-greets with their favorite characters from those series. The seasonal cruise themes include:
- Very Merrytime Cruises at Christmas
- Halloween on the High Seas
Some cruises that fall over special holiday dates will have small celebrations in them. Like New Year’s Eve, Thanksgiving, Easter, and Fourth of July. Some of the special location based cruises are:
- Panama Canal
- Alaska
- Hawaii
These sailings have Mickey and friends in special outfits for some very one of a kind photo opportunities!
It’s For All Ages
Whether you are sailing with infants, toddlers, teens, or just adults, Disney has an area for you! Any young infants can be signed up for the It’s A Small World Nursery. There, parents can be assured that any of their children that are six months to three years old are well taken care of.
Similarly, there are the Oceaneer’s Club and the Oceaneer’s Lab which are for ages 3 – 12. This way, parents can have a nice relaxing vacation without worrying about where their children are.
Once their kids hit the ages of 11 – 14, they can go into Edge, the preteen hideaway allowing them to enter and leave as they please.
Teenager’s don’t have to worry about being around the younger kids. Getting into the 14 – 17 year old club, Vibe, requires a special key card, meaning not even parents can intrude on their space! Inside they have a private pool, multiple game consoles, and a smoothie bar.
Don’t think adults are left out either! There are plenty of places for them to get away. There are adult decks and pools known as Quiet Cove on all four ships. On each ship there are also piano bars, a dance club, and a sports pub. The newer ships, The Dream and the Fantasy, also include Satellite falls- a a waterfall soaking pool, a champagne lounge, and a metropolitan themed lounge. While they may be unable to partaking in any alcoholic events, those who are 18 – 20 years old have special events to mingle with others in their age group.
While the current global climate has everyone worried about safety and cleanliness, be sure to read up on how they handled the break out of the COVID-19 pandemic!
After reading this, now I want to go on a Disney Cruise with my grandson. He is 3. I think he may enjoy it more at 7-8. Thoughts? What about sea sickness?
Hello,
Thank you for reading!
To be honest, it would depend on the cruise that you decided to go on! Certain cruises sometimes may have less kids his age on them. For example, one cruise that I had gone on left from New York and fell over something called ‘Jersey Week’. This is essentially a fall break in New Jersey. This particular cruise was jam packed with children, and also happened to be a Marvel cruise! On the other hand, I was just on the Panama Canal Westbound, and because it was two weeks and fell during school, there were less than 500 children on the ship. One thing that can help with finding out if there would be others his age are ‘cruise groups’. These are Facebook groups completely independent of Disney where people who are planning on going on the cruise can talk about it and get to know other cruisers before sailing.
As for sea sickness, the customer service desk actually has a wide array of over the counter of medications including things like ibuprofen, Advil, sea sickness medication, tums, and many more! You can also find these outside of the medical bay on Deck 1 Midship. You can also get ‘Sea bands’- bracelets that can help with sea sickness. The only times I have gotten sea sick, however, were on days where the ocean was particularly rocky!
I hoped this helped, feel free to let me know if you have any other questions!
