It’s November…
And I can never understand why people are already celebrating Christmas. We still have Thanksgiving to get through, and even then it’s still Spook Season (Halloween 24/7/365)
This week I did a lot of drawing and arrangement for my concept artworks. For the concepts, I wanted to capture the creatures that I have created in their natural habitats. This way the viewer not only gets a sense about the creature, but they are also gaining a bit of information about the world that they live in.
♧♧ CLUBS ♧♧
For the Club’s variant, I took inspiration from landscapes like Texas, Mexico, and Arizona. I kept the color palette to be on the warmer side of colors, instead of including colors with blue undertones in order to keep the piece feeling like a sunnier, drier climate. This piece is different than the others in that it is in portrait orientation rather than landscape. With the placement of the flying evolution as a kind of silhouette in front of a highly risen sun, it helps create a sense of a flat and empty landscape.
I included the rock formation from a previous update where I talked about the Club variation gathering flint rocks to help ignite the flammable portions of their bodies. I also included a skeleton to not only further world build creatures, but to add into the stereotypical ‘desert’ landscape. Two of the base evolution are shown sparring to give nod to their more loner tendencies and territorial natures.
♢♢ DIAMONDS ♢♢
For the Diamond Variant, I wanted to emphasize their nature to live in colonies. Most of the region they live in is underground, and so I kept the concept art very dark, with only occasional highlights. As I clean up the piece, I will add in the glowing eyes and gemstone that they have on their shells to add another layer to the image.
♤♤ SPADES ♤♤
With the Spade Variant, I not only wanted to display the ability they have to glide across the sky but also the highly forested and windy valleys that they live in. I used a sunset to not only provide very dramatic lighting, but to also be able to emphasize the way that the clouds are formed in the valleys. The clouds are used to show high wind speeds due to their elongated form, rather than the traditional fluffy clouds. I also wanted to show the creatures tendency to soar high in the skies and hide out in the tree tops, away from humans.
♡♡ HEARTS ♡♡
Finally, for the Heart Variant I had a hard time knowing what I wanted to do. I had an idea in my head of having a human in the image to display the relation between the creatures and their deck holders. But there in lies the issue of I am not the greatest at drawing humans in the first place. I went through a couple of various sketches and compositions, some not even having a human in them at all, before finalizing on one with a creature resting on their deck holder’s shoulder as they watch other creatures glide and soar around the region.
I used more muted colors to emphasize the region’s rainy and dreary weather, as well as having the deck holder wear a raincoat. I put various islands in the horizon because over half of the region is covered in water.
Until next time!
