As Information & Privacy Commissioner for Ontario, Canada, Dr. Ann Cavoukian developed the Privacy by Design (PbD) framework.
Privacy by Design is a flexible framework that can be applied to many design processes, from system configuration to business processes to strategic communication planning. PbD can also be used as a conceptual framework, applied to case study analysis in a learning experience, for example.
The Privacy by Design framework has seven foundational principles:
- Proactive, not reactive; preventive, not remedial
- Privacy as the default setting
- Privacy embedded into design
- Full functionality – positive-sum, not zero-sum
- End-to-end security – full life-cycle protection
- Visibility and transparency – keep it open
- Respect for user privacy – keep it user-centric
