Hello, I am Koun. I am a third year Ph. D student in Learning, Design, Technology (LDT) program. I am originally from Seoul in South Korea. I had my B.A. and M.A. in South Korea and came to Penn State to pursue my Ph.D in LDT. I’m interested in designing learning environments where people can engage in activities that they aimed for. Among the numerous aspects of learning environments, my primary focus is on how people learn in different learning spaces or physical learning environment. In particular, I’m interested in studying the way affordances of a learning space influence different types of collaboration among people.
I feel comfortable using different technological devices as a consumer, but I do not have development skills such as programming (if you have expected). To be honest, I prefer to use pencil and a piece of paper to jot down something and visualize my ideas by drawing than to use a tablet or laptop. However, my motivation for studying the way it is used is its strong power to connect people and create shared experiences whether you are in online or face-to-face settings. I think technology can contribute to creating authentic environment where you can learn how to collaborate and cooperate with others. I see technology facilitates the way you to get information from the world, create, and share your ideas and therefore enables you to more focus on the re-creation of what’s already in the world.
Something interesting about me…
I like hands-on activities. I often go to 2000 degrees pottery in downtown where you can paint and decorate pre-fired pottery. Another hobby I have is knitting hat. These are helpful when I need to take my minds off the study or work for a while, and also give me products for practical use:)
