For this week I started to work on my character creations and I believe I finally found a style I would love to work with! I wanted to focus on the characters more intently than the objects or other assets I will be creating because they were my toughest challenge. I ended up finding a YouTube video and creator (Keelan Jon) who showed simple and creative ways to make stylized characters. These videos were easy for me to follow and I loved the look of his characters. I have followed his one video pretty closely just so I could understand his set work flow and find an easy way to create the characters. My first model does follow his style and it is very similar so I will most likely go in and change parts. I will also be creating and adding in elements that will fit my theme as well, so this will change the overall look of my first character.
Here I began to sculpt and create the initial head of my character. I followed Keelan Jon’s tutorial for these aspects. I will create my own characters after this in my own style but following the similar workflow that I followed for this model. I also enjoy this type of character style a lot, so I think I will end up keeping this look and altering it slightly to create my own identity. While working on this character, I had an epiphany for how I wish to shade my creations. To make my life easier, and my work more creative (in my opinion) I have decided to created my models to the look of Claymation!
I have done extensive research on how to create clay shaders using nodes in blender and I also learned the easiest way to animate this style so it looks like there will be movement on my assets and characters! I think this will be interesting and make my creations more eye catching and unique rather than normal texture painting or flat colors.
I’m not completely done this model yet, I still have to make the hands and then the little details to make this model more personal and to fit my theme better, I wanted to test out the look of the clay before I continued with that thought to test the waters. After I finish this model, I will work on my next few characters. Depending on who or what I choose to create, I might limit myself to 3 characters (or more!). I will also be creating the weapons, food, and any other small asset I believe will help my theme. I don’t find those aspects to not be too difficult so I will focus on the characters more. I will also be rigging my characters to pose them in more interesting ways!
