Here’s my final result for the blackbird project. There were a lot of problems I had as I was trying to create things. I wanted my image to be elegant but it ended up something like this. I had to sacrifice a lot of my initial ideas so I could make everything work out. Figuring out how to have one thing stand out over another was another struggle of mine. I’m not entirely happy with my final result, but it was the best I could do.
What I attempted to do with this image was focus on the blackbird and the woman in the poem. A part of the poem I took this idea from was “Do you not see how the blackbird / Walks around the feet / Of the women about you?”. In the initial image I wanted, I also wanted to include a man from the stanza “A man and a woman / Are one. / A man and a woman and a blackbird / Are one.” I attempted to add mountains in the background and make the long hair of the woman into ocean waves as stated ” The river is moving. / The blackbird must be flying.” I tried creating lighter wings at the bottom of the blackbird to represent the “golden birds” in the poem, but I don’t think I executed this well. The white pound signs are meant to represent the snow, the tree beside the woman is meant to represent the cedar limbs, and the bag the blackbird is holding is suppose to represent the unity between the man, woman, and blackbird. The white pound signs beside this bag is also meant to subtly represent the golden birds mentioned in the poem, in case the light wings couldn’t.
