Bank Points: Media’s Effects on Society

Over the past four weeks, I have a newfound appreciation for the media and all that it does. I find myself critiquing the media and analyzing it’s effects subconsciously. I really enjoy analyzing certain situations and studying the effects or influence a given object or idea has on a group of people. This assignment started out as the 24 hours without technology but I soon realized I didn’t have enough time for that. I instead decided to analyze the effects that media has on ... Denny’s Case Study

In the 1990’s Denny’s was involved in a series of discrimination lawsuits. These suits involved several cases of servers denying or providing inferior service to racial minorities, particularly black customers. The first incident occurred in San Jose, California in 1991 when 17 year old African American Kristina Ridgeway entered Denny's in San Jose in 1991 with a group of her peers and was asked to pay a cover charge while her Caucasian classmates were served ahead of her. Similarly, in 1993, a ... [Continue Reading]

Interview of Color

When I first read the syllabus and saw the assignment for an “Interview of Diversity,” I must admit I had no idea how to go about doing such an assignment. As much as I loved diversity and had such an appreciation for it, I found discussing it somewhat awkward. I felt that I could never find the right words to articulate my interest and found myself shy to ask such important and personal questions. I studied the syllabus and jotted down questions I believed would be easy to ask and simple to ... [Continue Reading]

Dinosaurs Take Japan

It was announced on July 22, 2015 that Jurassic World became the third highest-grossing film in history, following Titanic and Avatar. What an incredible achievement! Jurassic World has earned more than $1.52 billion in the box office. The studio behind the magic, Universal, has also produced two of the top five highest grossing films this year. This was the first time that a Universal film grossed more than $1 billion at the box office. Congratulations, Universal! The film is the sequel ... [Continue Reading]

FYE: The power of diversity

Following my interview of color, D'Aundra told me about her friend Mayeesa. Mayeesa is a student at High Point University majoring in Journalism. D'Aundra said that Mayeesa would be very interested in talking to me due to our similar major and interests. I jumped on the opportunity and gave D'Aundra my phone number so she could give it to Mayeesa. This morning, I received a text from Mayeesa. She explained to me who she was and her reason for contacting me. I was very surprised that the reason ... [Continue Reading]

Tylenol 1982

Following the Tylenol incident of 1982, many thought Johnson & Johnson would never be able to recover from the tragic incident that killed seven innocent people. It was how Johnson & Johnson handled the situation and used it as an opportunity ensure the future safety of their consumers. On September 29, 1982, the first death caused by the ingestion of extra-strength Tylenol was reported in a Chicago suburb. Within the next week, six other Tylenol related deaths were reported.  This ... [Continue Reading]

FYE: An Old Friend’s Words of Wisdom

On Wednesday, I found my way to a local Starbucks where I met with a friend for coffee and much needed caffeine. We've known each other now for about three years and it's been great having a friend like him to discuss the ever-changing moments in our lives. Our friendship is actually a very interesting story; one that I don't think is necessary relevant anymore. We began talking about my new college experience and my transition from the young teenager who ran nearly every organization in high ... [Continue Reading]

Culturally Aware

I interviewed Junior D'Aundra for my Interview of Color assignment and I found it so interesting, so inspiring, I just had to blog about it. When I sat down to talk to D'Aundra about her life, her interests, and some of the prejudices she's encountered, I was so enveloped and found myself hanging onto every word she said. She briefly touched  on her upbringing and as I asked more questions she dug deeper and deeper into her past. I could see her searching for the right words to answer my ... [Continue Reading]

War Heroes

On July 18, presidential candidate Donald Trump slandered Arizona Senator John McCain, claiming he "isn't a war hero because he got caught." What I found so interesting was Senator McCain's response to the slander. Rather than fire back at Trump and questioning his absence from the Vietnam War, he chose to take the high road and move forward. He stated that Trump doesn't owe McCain an apology but rather all veterans who served in any war because of his degrading comment. McCain stated "...… ... [Continue Reading]

FYE: Real Time Chat

Since my first day at Penn State, I was really looking forward to talking with my professors, advisors, and mentors regarding my future plans. Today, I got to sit down with Professor Nichols and discuss my career plans and what it might entail. Following my first visit to Disney, I became OBSESSED with all things Disney. I would spend hours researching the company and the intricate details that make it so fabulous. I had done research on the best degrees and what it was exactly that Disney ... [Continue Reading]
