Mennonite Mothering

CALL FOR PAPERS

Demeter Press is seeking submissions for an edited collection on

Mennonite Mothering

Editors: Rachel Epp Buller and Kerry Fast Publication Date: 2012/2013

This collection of scholarly essays will explore the connections between mothering / motherhood and Mennonite religion and culture, broadly defined. There are thriving Mennonite communities in Canada and the United States as well as in many pockets of Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Religious traditions, cultural stereotypes, and societal (mis)perceptions all contribute to varied understanding of maternal roles in Mennonite life. Rhoda Janzen’s bestselling memoir, Mennonite in a Little Black Dress, which played heavily upon traditional gender roles, recently brought much mainstream attention to Mennonite culture. We invite papers from a wide range of disciplines that speak to historical and present-day perceptions and expectations of Mennonite maternal experiences. We especially encourage papers that address mothering in old order communities of North and South America and in other Mennonite contexts around the world.

Suggested topics may include but are not limited to:

Nonviolent mothering; activist mothering; transnational mothering; perspectives of young Mennonite mothers; intergenerational mothering; mothering in the mission field or in relief and development work; gender roles in a Mennonite context; Mennonite mothering and the arts; mothering in historical Mennonite communities; shifting socio-cultural perceptions of Mennonite mothering; lesbian mothering in a Mennonite setting; religious expectations of mothers; Mennonite relationships with the sacred maternal; Mennonite mothers and domesticity; mothers as purveyors of religious-cultural heritage; and more.

Submission guidelines:

Abstracts: 250 words. Please include a brief biography (with citizenship information).

Deadline for abstracts is May 31, 2011

Please send submissions to both:

Rachel Epp Buller, rachel@ddtr.net and Kerry Fast, kfast@chass.utoronto.ca

Subject line: Mennonite mothering abstract

Accepted papers of 4000-5000 words (15-20 pages) will be due December 1, 2011 and should conform to MLA style.

Committee will conduct the workshop. They will review all the submissions
and comment on the content of the work as well as on the presentation.
Students will have 20 minutes to present their research, focusing on the
main theme of their thesis, what they have achieved so far and how they
plan to continue their work. Another 20 minutes are reserved for
discussion and feedback from the panel of reviewers. The Doctoral
Consortium will take place on a single full day. Up to 12 students will
have the opportunity to participate.

Submissions should be related to one or more of the conference themes as
stated in the Call for Papers. Moreover, they should be presented in a
way that demonstrates the link to the chosen conferences theme(s), and
they should contain:

– a clear formulation of the research topic and research hypotheses;
– an outline of the significant problems in the field and their current
solutions;
– a description of the proposed approach and its expected contributions;

The Congress makes concerted effort to reach out to participants affiliated with diverse entities (such as: universities, institutions, corporations, government agencies, and research centers/labs) from all over the world. The congress also attempts to connect participants from institutions that have teaching as their main mission with those who are affiliated with institutions that have research as their main mission. The congress uses a quota system to achieve its institution and geography diversity objectives." One main goal of the congress is to assemble a spectrum of affiliated research conferences, workshops, and symposiums into a coordinated research meeting held in a common place at a common time. This model facilitates communication among researchers in different branches of computer science, computer engineering, and applied computing. The Congress also encourages multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research initiatives; ie, facilitating increased opportunities for cross-fertilization across sub-disciplines. According to "Microsoft Academic Search" (a Microsoft initiative) all tracks of WORLDCOMP are listed as worldwide "Top-ranked Conferences" (based on various metrics but mainly based on the number of citations). You can access "Microsoft Academic Search" to extract citation data for each individual track of worldcomp using the following link: http://academic.research.microsoft.com/ As of March 4, 2011, the papers published in the proceeedings have received 14,385 citations which is a higher citation than many reputable journals in computer science.

Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA)

Share your great ideas with YALSA!  The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) is seeking proposals for programs for continuing education sessions for ALA’s 2012 Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, June 22 – 26, 2012. YALSA is looking for programs that highlight innovations &/or best practices in young adult librarianship in these priority areas: Advocacy, Leadership, Outreach, Programming, Readers’ Advisory, Research, Young Adult Literature and Youth Participation.  YALSA seeks creative, innovative proposals that address new topics, or that address current topics in a unique way.

Individuals may submit multiple proposals; however, no individual will be chosen to present or co-present more than one program. Proposals that are largely sales pitches or that focus only one particular product will not be accepted. All presenters, moderators, speakers, etc. will be expected to cover their own travel and conference registration costs. Programs will need to be either 90 or 120 minutes in length.  To submit an RFP, please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YALSA2012rfp.  Proposals will be accepted until May 31, 2011.  Please feel free to share this information with colleagues.

About the conference: The ALA Annual Conference is the largest library conference in the world–there is something for everyone!  While full conference attendance ranges from 18,000 to 28,000, between 800 – 1,200 YALSA members attend the ALA Annual Conference each year.  At the event, YALSA hosts over 100 meetings, programs, events and social gatherings.  Presenters/speakers who participate in YALSA’s programs gain national exposure and can take advantage of the ability to network with the movers and shakers in the field of young adult librarianship.  Opportunities to extend the reach beyond conference attendees by blogging, presenting a webinar, writing an article, etc. are available to presenters/speakers.
