The IL Connection: From How We Learn to Now We Learn

2017 Connecticut Information Literacy Conference
Friday, June 16, 2017
Manchester Community College Manchester, Connecticut
8:30 am – 3:00 pm

We all know that the learning process is different for each individual. How
does one create meaningful instruction to address all of these different
learning styles? One might argue that we must take a journey to the source,
the human brain. Our conference this year will feature keynote speaker Dr. G.
Christian Jernstedt of Dartmouth College, who will focus on the inner workings
of the brain, the process of learning, and how librarians can support
learning.

We will also offer a hands-on preconference workshop led by Dr. Jernstedt on
Thursday, June 15th. This half day session will take a look at cognition from
a student’s point of view. What takes place in their brains during teaching,
and what information is retained once the lesson is over? Dr. Jernstedt will
also touch upon topics surrounding student assessment, including what makes it
important and best practices to ensure that it is meaningful. Attendance will
be limited to 40 participants.

The Connecticut Information Literacy Conference Committee invites you and your
colleagues to submit proposals for breakout workshops (45-50 minutes long with
a 10-15 minute Q & A session).

Possible ideas to explore include:
– hands-on learning and how it’s assessed
– tailoring instruction to different learning styles
– instruction design and development
– teaching in virtual reality (building tutorials and more)
– engaging 21st century learners
– connecting the ACRL Framework with how students learn

Team presenters such as faculty-librarian are highly encouraged to submit a
proposal

For consideration, please submit this form by March 10, 2017. Benefits to the
presenters include eligibility for one-half conference registration fee for up
to two presenters and the opportunity to build your presentation experience
and receive valuable feedback from your colleagues. Accepted proposals will be
notified on or about March 28, 2017. Questions regarding proposals should be
directed to Joy Hansen, 860-343-5832, jhansen@mxcc.edu
