2018 ALA Annual Conference New Orleans, LA

ALA Conference Services will begin accepting program proposals on May 17, 2017 for the 2018 ALA Annual Conference to take place at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans LA, June 21-26, 2018. For the first time, proposals will be accepted via one submission site for all ALA Divisions, RoundTables, Committees and Offices.

Programs at the Annual Conference are one-hour educational sessions on a topic relevant to the library profession. Submissions are open to anyone, regardless of ALA membership status.

The deadline to submit content will be August 25, 2017 12:00 Midnight (CST). Please use this submission site.

Note your ALA account information will be required to access the submission site.

ALA Annual Conference—Transforming Our Libraries, Ourselves

Where There is Thunder, There is Lightning: EDI and Change in Libraries

Program Date and Time: Sunday, June 25th from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

The ALA Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Implementation Working Group is looking for lightning talks on equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives from a broad range of libraries.

The presentation will be on Sunday, June 25th from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, IL and will include the option for video presentations if you can’t attend in person.

Presenters will have 5 minutes to share their successes and failures with initiatives designed to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in your libraries, which means we have time for up to 12 presentations.

CALL FOR PAPERS: 2017 LIBRARY RESEARCH ROUND TABLE FORUMS

ALA Annual Conference, Chicago, June 22-27

 

The Library Research Round Table (LRRT) is accepting paper submissions for two Research Forums at the 2017 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago. The LRRT Research Forums will feature 20-minute presentations of library and information science (LIS) research followed by discussion. Proposals are due midnight Eastern on Monday, May 1, 2017. (See submission information below.) Notification of acceptance will be made on Friday, May 5, 2017.

 

DESCRIPTION OF THE SESSIONS

LRRT Research Forum 1: Emerging Topics in LIS Research

This session, for practitioners, researchers, educators, and students, will feature three research papers that investigate emerging topics in library and information science (LIS) research. The three peer-reviewed papers will be selected as examples of excellence in research relating to new and under-studied topics in the broad field of information services.

 

LRRT Research Forum 2: Theory, Methods, and Practices in Library Research: Reports from the Field

This session, for practitioners, researchers, educators, and students, will present three peer-reviewed papers describing research with the potential to make significant contributions to the field of library and information science (LIS). The three papers will selected as examples of research excellence, with a focus on work exemplifying strong use of theory, clear and well-organized research design, and appropriate data gathering and analysis methods.

 

SUBMISSIONS DETAILS

LRRT welcomes submissions emphasizing the problems, theories, methodologies, or significance of research findings for LIS. Topics can include, but are not limited to, user studies and user behavior, electronic services, service effectiveness, and organizational structure and personnel. All researchers, including practitioners from all types of libraries and other organizations, LIS faculty, graduate students, and other interested individuals are encouraged to submit proposals. Both members and nonmembers of LRRT are welcome to submit.

 

The selection committee will use a blind review process to select six papers, three for each of the two forums. Authors of the selected papers will be required to present their papers in person at the forums and to register for the conference. Criteria for selection include:

 

1. Significance of the research problem to LIS research and practice.

2. Quality and creativity of the methodology/methods/research design.

3. Clarity of the connection to existing LIS research.

 

Note: Research accepted for publication by January 31, 2017, will not be considered.

 

Each submission must consist of no more than two pages. On the first page, list the author names, titles, institutional affiliations, and contact information, including mailing addresses and email addresses. Also indicate which forum you are applying for:

 

Forum 1: Emerging Topics in LIS Research

Forum 2: Theory, Methods, and Practices in Library Research: Reports from the Field

 

The second page must NOT show your name or any personally identifying information. Instead, it must include:

 

1. The paper title.

2. A 500-word abstract of the research project, including: 1) a problem statement and significance, 2) project objectives, 3) methods/methodology, and 4) conclusions (or tentative conclusions for work in progress).

3. A brief statement saying if the research is complete or ongoing and listing the project beginning and end dates.

ALA Annual Poster Sessions (Chicago)

Share your best ideas and work with the national library community by presenting a poster session at the 2017 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago!

The poster session committee encourages submissions from all types of libraries and on any topic relevant to librarianship. Submissions may include a description of an innovative library program; an analysis of a solution to a problem; a report of a research study; or any other presentation that would benefit the larger library community.

Poster session participants place materials such as pictures, data, graphs, diagrams and narrative text on boards that are usually 4 x 8 feet. During their assigned 1½ hour time periods, participants informally discuss their presentations with conference attendees.

ALA LIRT Transitions to College Committee Preconference: Examining and Supporting Student Transitions Across the Library Spectrum

Do you have innovative and exciting case-studies or research to share on the topic of student transitions? The ALA LIRT Transitions to College Committee is seeking panelists for a pre-conference session at the 2017 ALA Annual Conference. The pre-conference, titled , will educate participants on the role of libraries in supporting students’ educational transitions. These transitions may include high school to college, primary to secondary school, undergraduate to graduate school, and from formal schooling into adult life. This pre-conference will interest librarians from public, school and academic libraries, combining various types of presenters and session formats. Sessions will include: successful case studies of library programs meant to ease students’ transitions; a conversation about school, public and academic library learning standards; a panel of researcher specializing in students’ transition behavior and how libraries prepare and support transitions; and opportunities for group discussion and brainstorming.

We are seeking 2-3 case-study panelists and 2-3 research panelists. Presentations will range from 15-25 minutes depending on number of panelists.

Date has not been confirmed, but this is a PRE-CONFERENCE session.

International Papers and Projects Committee ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois

The American Library Association, International Papers and Projects Committee invites proposals for presentations to be made at the next ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Presentations will be delivered at the International Papers Session scheduled in June 2017. The International Papers and Projects Program provides librarians with an opportunity to exchange information about library services, collections and projects throughout the world. The program also serves to stimulate the interest of U.S. librarians in international library matters. We invite presentation proposals based on the International Papers and Projects 2017 theme:

 

Libraries Transform: Programs and Services for Sustainable Environments, Social Justice, and Quality Education for All

Because Libraries reach a large cross-section of the public, they are in a unique position to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the promotion of sustainable environments, social justice, and quality education. This program will feature presentations and projects by librarians or professionals working outside the USA or involved in projects outside of the USA whose research, libraries, or projects are working to:

  • Promote lifelong learning

 

  • Provide inclusive and quality education for all

 

  • Reduce inequality

 

  • Promote just and inclusive societies

 

  • Contribute to environmental sustainability

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Proposals, presentations, and papers must be written and delivered in English, which is the working language of the program.

Proposals should include:

  1. Title of the presentation
  2. Name, title, institutional affiliation, and full contact information (including a valid e-mail address) for each presenter
  3. Abstract (300-500 words)
  4. A short biographical profile of each presenter

Proposals should be submitted electronically (as a single Microsoft Word or PDF attachment) to the International Relations Office via email at intl@ala.org with a copy to jsolis@email.unc.edu and paromitabiswas7@gmail.com.

 

Deadline for submitting proposals is December 17, 2016.

SELECTION PROCESS

Four proposals will be selected to present at the ALA Annual Meeting in June 2017. Notification of acceptance will be emailed by January 30, 2017.

PRESENTATION FORMAT

The International Papers and Projects Program is 1.5 hours total. Presentations should run about 20 minutes each, followed by a question-and-answer session. Presenters are encouraged to prepare a dynamic and interactive presentation, incorporating visual prompts, technologies, games, questions for the audience, etc. PowerPoints are common, but speakers who want to read a paper or refer to it are welcome to do so.

The ALA Video Round Table Program Committee (VRT) welcomes program proposals for ALA Annual on just about anything related to video and libraries! The term video includes moving picture media in all of its forms – DVDs, streaming, video tapes, video art, YouTube videos, animation, iPhone shot footage, etc.

Proposals are due SOON, August 31, 2016!

Sample ideas (but we very much welcome others):

  • Have you created video tutorials?

  • Are you using film clips (or gifs) in instruction?

  • Have you created a media center for your patrons?
  • Do you work with students or faculty in video creation?
  • Are you finding new ways to promote films to your community?
  • Are you doing anything interesting in curating your film collection?

The Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) welcomes proposals for professional development webinars. The ASCLA Online Learning Committee evaluates proposals for professional development webinars that support the work of ASCLA’s members who include:

– library staff providing services to special populations, including library users with disabilities and adults and youth who are incarcerated or detained
– independent librarians and consultants
– state libraries and their employees
– public libraries serving or working with the populations above
– library networks and cooperatives

Software Platform: All webinars will be hosted by ASCLA and delivered using Adobe Connect; presenters will receive software training from the ASCLA Web Manager.

Length: All webinars should be approximately 60 to 90 minutes in length.

Deadlines and Timeframe: Accepted proposals will be presented between October 15. 2016 and August 31, 2017.

Payment to Presenters: Webinar presenters will be paid $150 for each webinar presented. Co-presenters may split the payment.
