Beta Phi Mu/LRRT Research Paper Award for 2012

Call for Papers

This award is being jointly presented by The Beta Phi Mu International
Honor Society
(http://www.beta-phi-mu.org/) and the American Library Association’s
Library Research Round Table (http://www.ala.org/lrrt/)  to recognize
excellent research into problems related to the profession of
librarianship.   Any ALA member is eligible  for this $500 award, and all
methodologies and research topics/questions are eligible for
consideration.   The criteria to be followed for the selection of an award
winner are:

•        Importance of the research question or problem
•        Adequacy of the review of relevant literature
•        Appropriateness of the methodology used
•        Effectiveness of the application of the methodology
•        Addition of the findings to the knowledge and/or praxis in the field of
librarianship
•        Articulation of the conclusions emanating from the study
•        Clarity and completeness

The page limit for submissions will be thirty (30) double-spaced pages
plus bibliography.  Only complete papers will be considered and
submissions should be made electronically to the contact person below.
The submissions must not have been published prior to March 1, 2012 and
should follow APA style.   Individuals may submit only one paper.  Jointly
authored papers are acceptable, but all authors must be ALA members, and
will split the award of $500.

The deadline for submission is March 1, 2012.  All submissions that meet
the deadline and the criteria (including length of paper) will be
considered.  The papers will undergo a blind-review process by a joint
BPM/LRRT award committee and the winner will be notified by May 1, 2012.

information including name, institutional affiliation, mailing address and
email address.

The award will be presented during one of LRRT’s research programs at the
ALA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA, June 21-25, 2012.

Ilene F. Rockman Instruction Publication Winner

Do you Know the Next Instruction Section Ilene F. Rockman Instruction Publication Winner?

The Ilene F. Rockman Instruction Publication of the Year Award honors the late Dr. Ilene Rockman, a nationally recognized leader in information literacy. The Rockman Award recognizes an outstanding article or book on instruction or information literacy in an academic library environment, published within the last two years. Publications are judged on the basis of relevance to the field of instruction in academic or research libraries, originality, timeliness, and quality of writing. Winners are awarded a $3,000 cash prize donated by the Emerald Group.

Nominations must include a complete citation, a letter of support explaining how the publication meets the award criteria, and, whenever possible, a copy of the publication.

2010 Susan Koppelman Award for Best Anthology, Multi-Authored, or Edited Book in Feminist Studies in Popular and/or American Culture

 The 2010 Susan Koppelman Award is sponsored by the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association. Award winners will be announced at the PCA/ACA annual convention in San Antonia Texas, April 20-April 23, 2011 and posted on the PCA/ACA website at. http://www.h-net.org/~pcaaca/, on other appropriate websites, and in newsletters. CALL FOR PAPERS: 2011 ALISE/LMC Paper Award

 

Library Media Connection and the ALISE Youth Services and School Library Media Special Interest Groups proudly announce the 2011 Youth Services Paper Award and invite the submission of papers related to youth services in libraries. An award of $1000 will be made to recognize an outstanding paper reporting innovative research in youth services. Submissions must be received on or before 15 July 2010. Email submissions only (see below for details).

Papers are invited on topics related to youth services in public libraries or school library media centers, including, but not limited to

  • resources specially developed for youth
  • history of youth services in libraries
  • information seeking behavior of youth
  • service and program evaluation
  • policy research
  • technology innovation
  • the relationship between libraries and other organizations
  • collection development

 Papers must include a section on the applicability of the research to practice. Also, papers should not have been previously published.
Authors MUST be personal members of ALISE and members of either the ALISE Youth Services SIG or the School Library Media SIG. In cases of joint authorship, one honorarium will be awarded for the paper. Graduate students as well as faculty are eligible to submit papers.
Only one paper per entrant may be submitted for the 2011 ALISE/LMC Paper Award. Authors may not simultaneously submit the same paper to other ALISE competitions or venues. And currently-serving panel selectors are not eligible.
The winning author is expected to present a summary of the paper during the 2011 ALISE Conference. The paper will be scheduled into one of the ALISE Awards sessions by the conference planning committee. Winning papers subsequently published should acknowledge having received the ALISE/LMC Paper Award.
The author(s) of the winning paper must also agree to produce a version of the paper for publication in Library Media Connection. The decision to publish or not to publish will be at the discretion of the journal’s editor.

Submission Requirements
Papers, including title page, abstract (150 word maximum), and references, must not exceed 25 double-spaced pages, should have one-inch margins, be in 12-point font, and should be paginated in the upper right corner of each page.
The paper should be organized as follows:

  • Title page (separate page)
  • Abstract
  • Text
  • References

The name(s) of the author(s) must appear on the title page ONLY. The title should appear both on the title page and at the top of the page on which the abstract appears. Submissions must be received on or before 15 July 2010. Email submissions only.

Selection Process
Papers will be judged by an awards committee constituted jointly by members of the Youth Services and School Library Media SIGs, selected and convened by the previous year’s chair or co-chairs. Immediate past SIG chairs cannot serve on the selection panel. All submissions will be subject to blind review. Each immediate past SIG chair solicits and appoints 2 committee members from their respective memberships. These 4 then serve as the review panel, work independently, and render the award decision. The committee reserves the right not to make an award if the submissions are considered to be of insufficient quality.

Manuscripts sought for LITA/Ex Libris student writing award

CHICAGO – The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is offering an award for the best unpublished manuscript submitted by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program.  Sponsored by LITA and Ex Libris, the award consists of $1,000, publication in LITA’s refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL) and a certificate.  The deadline for submission of the manuscript is Feb. 28, 2010.

The purpose of the award is to recognize superior student writing and to enhance the professional development of students.  The manuscript can be written on any aspect of libraries and information technology. Examples include digital libraries, metadata, authorization and authentication, electronic journals and electronic publishing, telecommunications, distributed systems and networks, computer security, intellectual property rights, technical standards, desktop applications, online catalogs and bibliographic systems, universal access to technology, library consortia and others.

At the time the unpublished manuscript is submitted, the applicant must be enrolled in an ALA-accredited program in library and information studies at the masters or Ph.D. level.

MIRIAM BRAVERMAN MEMORIAL PRIZE

Are you an LIS student interested in activism and the struggle for social justice? Do you stay awake at night thinking about how your politics might inform your professional practice?

The MIRIAM BRAVERMAN MEMORIAL PRIZE, a presentation of the Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG), is awarded each year for the best paper about some aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship. Papers related to archivists, archives, and archival work are also eligible.

The winning paper will be published in the Summer 2009 issue of Progressive Librarian. The winner of the contest will also receive a $300 stipend to help offset the cost of travel to and from the 2009 American Library Association annual conference in Chicago, IL. The award will be presented at the annual PLG dinner.

 

Think you might be interested? Here’s the fine print:

1. Contestants must be library and/or information science students attending a graduate-level program in the United States or Canada.

2. Entries must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant, and must be written in English. Entries may not exceed 3,000 words, and must conform to MLA in-text citation style.

3. To facilitate the blind review process, each entry must include a cover sheet providing the contestant’s name, full contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address), name of the institution where the contestant is enrolled, and the title of the paper. No identifying information, other than the title, should appear on the paper itself.

4. Entries must be submitted electronically, in Microsoft Word or RTF format, to bravermansubmissions at gmail.com. Entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. CST on May 1, 2009.

5. The $300 stipend is available only to help defray the cost of ALA conference attendance; if the winner of the contest is unable to attend, the money will remain in the Braverman Prize endowment fund and may be donated to a progressive cause at the discretion of the selection committee.

Rethinking Resource Sharing

The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative was started to advocate for a complete rethink of the way libraries conduct resource sharing in the context of the global internet revolution. In order to showcase resource sharing innovation, the Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative has created an award to encourage libraries and librarians to make changes in how they do resource sharing and improve service to users.

Up to three winning submissions will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000 each. Recipients will be announced at the ALA RUSA STARS Rethinking Resource Sharing ALA Preconference on June 27, 2008 in Anaheim, CA, and also will be invited to present at the IFLA satellite preconference, Rethinking Access to Information: Evolving Perspectives on Information Content Delivery in Boston in August 2008. Funding for the 2008 Innovation Awards was provided by the Alliance of Library Service Networks www.librarynetworks.org
