Trump’s “Apology”

By now, I’m sure we have all seen the video of Trump from 2005 that features many vulgar statements regarding women.

Trump is heard saying, “Just kiss. I don’t even wait…And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything,” which pretty much shows how little respect he has for women, including his wife. Being married did not stop Trump from making such disgusting statements about other women. He clearly doesn’t see the real problem with his words, and brushed it off merely as “locker-room banter” which somehow was supposed to make what he said okay.

The footage has outraged many people, and rightly so. Multiple Republicans have taken back their endorsement of Trump, and the GOP has urged Trump to drop out of the race. Unfortunately, Trump says there is “zero chance I’ll quit” and refuses to drop out. So, as an attempt to save his chances, Trump has issued his first apology statement:

The word “apology” does not really fit the statement he gave. It was hardly apologetic, and instead was an insincere and defiant explanation, and an ominous threat to his opponent about exposing her own scandals at the upcoming debate.

Many people viewed it as overly scripted, and more of a “I’m sorry you were offended but I’m not sorry I did it” type of apology. If Trump was genuinely sorry, it would have shown in the video. He isn’t actually sorry about his behavior, he’s only sorry that he got caught and now has to provide the country an explanation for his comments.

Also, if he really saw the problem of his words, he would have at least tried to appear sincerely regretful, but instead Trump just switched the topic to Clinton. He couldn’t even recognize that what he did was the problem that needed to be addressed in this situation, and not his opponent.

Trump’s apology should have focused solely on him and his actions, and not distract away from his wrongdoings by hinting at his opponent’s, because either way what he said will still be wrong.

  1. Sadly, it appears that even this is not enough to lower what support Trump has. His believers and probable voters, along with the GOP, would still prefer to have a man like this instead of Hillary Clinton. There is nothing that can change his supporters’ minds. They don’t care if this is how he talks and if this is how he acts, because this is what they think is acceptable and part of why they support him.

  2. One thing about Trump that has never been seen before in any other presidential candidate is his lack of a filter. He says what he wants when he wants to say it. This gets him in trouble many times as we see here by his “locker room banter.” However, there is something amazing about this. He truly does not care what other people think. I feel like this can be a desirable quality in many people, but not a presidential candidate. Presidents have to know when to speak and when not to speak. Foreign relations are important and this is why if Trump is elected I truly cannot predict what will happen. All I know is that if he doesn’t learn how to filter himself, he’s going to get in a lot more trouble.
