Welcome to InDesign Accessibility for CS6: Steps to accessible InDesign documents. In this demonstration we will be adding alternative text to an image inserted into an InDesign document and applying anchors to an image inserted into an InDesign document. Title Slide
Alternative text added to an image can be read by a screen reader, allowing the content of the image to be accessible to a person with a visual disability The InDesign Document is open with sample text and image. Highlight entire document. Open ID doc prior to adding alternative text then start recording.
In this example we will add alternative text to the image located on the document. Highlight the image.
First, to select your image, make sure you use the selection tool. Highlight “selection” tool and select
And then click once on the image to select it. Highlight image before selecting and select.
In menu bar select Object then select Object Export Options. Highlight them in drop down menu then select.
In Object Export Options display select the ALT Text tab and change the Alt Text Source to Custom. Highlight Object Export Options pane. Then highlight Alt Text tab.Select Custom from drop down menu.

Add descriptive text in the ALT Text Source field. Do NOT click Done. We need to make sure that we tag the information to be exported to a PDF for later. Highlight text box and add sample description in the text box.
Next go to the Tagged PDF tab in the same Pane. Highlight the tab Tagged PDF. Highlight Tagged PDF pane after selected.
Set Apply Tag drop down menu to Based on Object. Highlight Apply Tag: dropdown menu. Highlight Based On Object. Select.
Set Actual Text Source to Custom. Highlight Actual Text Source dropdown menu. Highlight Custom. Select.
Select Done. Highlight Done. Select.
Next, the Anchoring Images tool allows screen readers to read images in a continuous flow of text. (Remember this only applies for InDesign version 5.5 and 6, only.) This feature allows a screen reader to read the ALT Tag description of the picture at the appropriate location in the associated content. This can be done in the middle of a paragraph or at the end or beginning of a paragraph. Now, be sure to place this Anchor after or before a complete sentence. Show completed slide with picture. Highlight Picture.  Slide of sample picture displayed in InDesign already open and place in association to content/text.
Click on the solid blue square and hold the mouse button. Highlight Anchor Icon.
And drag to the text where you would like the picture to follow in the content. Mouse movement to placement in text.
The solid blue icon will transform into an anchor symbol. This indicates the image is anchored to text. The image will now be structured to follow the text without moving in the document. Highlight the transformed Anchor Icon.
