Dr. Jacqueline (Jackie) McLaughlin is a respected professor of students in the life sciences, undergraduate research mentor to both students and faculty, researcher in biology education specializing in high-impact teaching practices, international conservationist, study abroad program director and educator, and science advisor to U.S. and foreign governments and universities. She has served as a Visiting Professor at Jiangnan University, Wuxi China, National Academy of Science Jefferson Science Fellow to the U.S. Department of State, Embassy Science Fellow to the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Romania, and a Special Counselor to the Vice-Rector at the University of Bucharest, Romania. To her credit, she is the Founding Director of Penn State CHANCE – a distinctive model that combines study abroad with undergraduate research focused on environmental sustainability. She has developed and led programs to Alaska, Australia, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Galapagos, Greece, Panama, Peru, Romania, and Tanzania. Presently, she is actively building a CHANCE program partnered with College Year in Athens (CYA) on plastic pollution in the Aegean Sea.

Dr. McLaughlin’s research interests hold true to her endless passion for teaching itself: (1) the utilization of authentic research in undergraduate biology education; (2) building pedagogical and mentoring frameworks that help biology faculty transform learning environments into authentic research experiences; and, (3) creating and assessing international programs that are interdisciplinary and effectively teach conservation through field research.
