Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow
Beatriz Véliz Argueta, completed her PhD (magna cum laude) at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin on the genesis and complex spatial history of the city of Guatemala and the unresolved tensions between indigenous and colonial urban spatiality tracing it to postcolonial contexts. Her research situates informal urbanism in contexts of long-term and on-going strategies of resistance to conquest and highlights and the complex connections between materiality, race and image. Her work combines history, urbanism and visual materials in an effort to better understand landscape and people and the narratives built around these encounters.
