Demi Lovato is now awake after being rushed to the hospital for a suspected drug overdose on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Demi’s rep claimed in a statement to Variety, “Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers, and support. Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy and not speculation as her health and recovery is the most important thing right now.” Just a few days ago, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a “medical emergency” where Demi Lovato’s home is located at the 8000 block of Laurel View Drive in the Hollywood Hills. Law enforcement explained that Lovato was found unconscious and treated with Narcan, a drug that treats narcotic overdoses in emergency situations. She was treated at her home and then taken to a local hospital. TMZ had initially reported that the overdose had been due to heroin, an opioid that provides users with euphoric effects. But a source close to Lovato has denied this cause.

25-year old Demi has struggled with substance abuse for years, and revealed in June that she had relapsed just a short time after celebrating six years of sobriety. In her song, “Sober,” she sings, “To the ones who never left me / We’ve been down this road before / I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.” Demi has also been treated for bipolar disorder and bulimia, only making her struggle even tougher. She opened up about her cocaine use in her 2012 documentary, “Stay Strong.” After the cancellation of her concert in Atlantic City, fans held their own concert to pay tribute to the struggling singer. Her dedicated supporters organized the event to show their respect for what Demi has endured this past week. Cheat Codes, a group that worked with Lovato on the song, “No Promises,” “took over the headlining spot for the show at the last minute.”

A fan attending the tribute exclaimed, “A lot of us traveled a long way to come see her and even though unfortunately she can’t be here, we still want to support one another.” It’s amazing to see the respect and support Demi’s fans were able to show here, as she was unable to perform. Opioid addiction is something to be taken extremely seriously, especially with this issue being on the rise in today’s society. It is so important to help out someone who may be struggling, whether it be from addiction or a mental disorder, because you never know what someone may be going through.
