Sustainable Landscapes Implementation Plan (Fall 2021 – current)

The Sustainable Landscape Implementation Plan (SLIP) is a project conceived by Eco Action in partnership with OPP Landscape Services and funded by the Student Fee Board’s Environmental Sustainability Fund.

Eco Action and OPP are working with landscape architectural design consultants, Stimson and Phyto Studio, who have completed an exhaustive analysis of all aspects of the campus landscape and outlined a series of goals and objectives.  With student, faculty, and staff input, they will develop recommendations and strategies that OPP can use to more sustainably design and manage campus landscapes.

The overarching purpose of the project is to increase overall campus sustainability and support PSU’s goal to reduce carbon emissions by 2035.  The plan is taking a very practical, incremental approach to be economically viable, in addition to its social and ecological goals.

Student involvement in both the planning and implementation has also been a primary focus.  The success of volunteer planting projects at the Arboretum are great examples of how students can make an impact.  Ultimately, the final plan and report will identify a pilot project, or projects, in which students will be able to participate in the planning, planting, and management of these new landscapes.

The consultants visited campus on September 7 with an open invitation workshop at 6:00 PM in the Stuckeman Family Building followed by a casual reception/social in the adjacent Korner Tower Terrace at Hort Woods.
