More Spring, 2006

Friends:
At least it didn’t snow last night! More signs of Spring out on and around the Nature Trail:

1. Great Yellows! The forsythia bushes and the daffodils are all blooming. Neither species is “natural” to our area (daffodils are native to Europe and forsythia are native to Asia) but both have escaped from yards and gardens and add to the colorful start of spring throughout our area (without too much damage to native plants, I might add).

2. Spice bush: A common, native shrub which is quite abundant along the Nature Trail is starting to flower. Its delicate, yellow flowers emerge several weeks before its leaves. Check out the Spice Bush species page on the Virtual Nature Trail for some great pictures and some interesting information on this aromatic (and medicinal!) shrub

3. Noises in the night! The Spring Peepers are at it again! That rolling, peeping noise at night is the mating chorus of these tiny, yet extremely vocal frogs. The male peepers gather around almost any type of wet land or surface water source and sing their chorus in an attempt to attract and impress a mate. I will have a species page completed about these little amphibians very soon, so watch the “Species Page List” on the Virtual Nature Trail for updates.

Deborah will have some wild flower bulletins coming soon.

Spring IS here!
