It is possible to take ECON courses at another institution but there are a few rules and procedures to note. A maximum of 12 ECON credits taken outside of University Park or World Campus can be applied toward the ECON degree. Of these 12 credits, a maximum of 3 credits can be used at the 400 level.
To find ECON equivalent courses, start by visiting the transfer tool website. You will see one of two things after you enter in the course information:
1) The course is listed as a direct equivalent to a Penn State ECON course
In this case students can simply take the course and have the transcript sent to the Penn State Admission Office once the grades have posted. Direct course equivalency is listed under the Penn State course column of the transfer guide. The column must say a specific class, such as “ECON 315” rather than saying general credits. It is recommended that students also check-in with their adviser to be sure the transfer plan is okay. Because course equivalencies can be updated at any time, students should also keep a print-out of the transfer evaluation screen for their records.
2) The course is listed as general ECON credit. Please speak with your academic adviser to see if can apply towards your ECON degree.
In ALL CASES, you should consult with your assigned academic adviser to confirm your plans.
Additional information about ECON and major course transfer evaluation can be found on the Economics Department webpage.
