One of the reasons why some people refuse to switch over to renewable energy is the fact that they just don’t believe that climate change is real, or that it is not going to just fix itself someday. Climate change is a very polarized issue, with people on both sides of the argument firmly opposing the other. In my last post, I talked about climate change in relation to fossil fuels. In this post, I will discuss the reasons why some people do not think climate change exists
One of the biggest claims against climate change is the notion that this is a natural cycle and the trend will eventually go back down again. While it is true that there is a natural cycle in the climate and temperature of the planet, such as the downtrends that have caused ‘mini Ice Ages’ in recent times, there is plenty of evidence that shows that the steep incline in temperature that is occurring right now is much larger than in any other time in the recent past. Most times, the natural cycle balances itself out, but with the greenhouse gas effect caused by the increasing carbon dioxide levels, there is not expected to be that sudden switch to decreasing temperatures again.
Climate change opposers also like to point out during wintertime the record lows that occur in certain places. Some extreme opposers have even posted pictures of them in the snow, as proof that the planet is not increasing in temperature. While in some places, there may be a slight decrease in temperature, it is important to look at the entire picture. The average global temperature has been increasing, but this does not mean that everywhere will have eternal summer yet. The seasons still exist despite the current global warming.
The final major reason why people deny climate change is the fact that they believe that even if it does exist, it won’t hurt us. This is just not true. If the temperature of the Earth gets too high, it could cause numerous problems for humans. The entire ecosystem could be irreversibly damaged to the point where human society could not even exist anymore due to a lack of food and other resources. The reality of the situation is that if we don’t do something fast, the consequences could be like nothing we have ever seen before.
Personally, I am a climate change believer, and I also believe that we need to make changes in order to try and fix this, but it is better said and done when the fossil fuel industry is so vital in our economy and so many people keep denying the facts of what is happening to our planet.
