The Island of Oranges

It’s a cold winter in State College, so let’s look toward somewhere warm: Jeju Island. Located on the Southwest corner of Korea, Jeju is a famous island known for its beauty… and oranges (they even have their own name: Hallabong).

The island is famous for its unique citrus fruit, the hallabong. It’s shaped like an orange with a little bulb on top and it’s slightly smaller than an orange but definitely larger than your average clementine. It is on the sweeter end of citrus fruits, so it’s definitely enjoyable for people who don’t enjoy the sour taste of oranges. This fruit is so famous that you’ll be able to find hallabong juice in almost any convenience store you go to in Jeju!

Of course, we have a lot of desserts inspired by the hallabong fruit, including tea, hallabong-ade latte, pastry, and even chocolate! Although you might be skeptical of a few of these combinations, it’s actually not as bad as you might think. There’s a little bit of tangy flavor to the sweetness which makes the dessert seem “less sweet” in a way (I’m not a fan of super sweet desserts ^^).

Another hallmark of Jeju Island is the stone statue Dol hareubang. They represent a deity that protects the island from evil spirits and demons (but also represents fertility…). The “Dol” means stone, so these statues are usually stone statues placed around the island. These statues are very very easy to spot, with their bulging, pupil-less eyes and hands sitting atop their bellies. As you tour the area, you may drive by many of these statues standing in the middle of fields, printed on your coffee cup, or even be the shape of your next bite of chocolate! They really are the icons of Jeju.

In the middle of the island, there is Mount Halla (Halla San; san = mountain) standing proudly boasting its UNESCO recognition. It’s classified as an active volcano (last eruption was around 5000 years ago) and stands tall as the highest point in South Korea. For people who love to hike, this is just the right place to be! There are many hiking trails around the mountain, with many wonderful views looking out into the ocean and grassland. But beware, there are lots of gusts as you reach the top of the mountain even during the hot summer days.

There is a Buddhist temple located on the mountains called Gwaneumsa which was built way back in the 1000s to spread Buddhism on the island. The temple that exists today is the rebuilt version due to many violent conflicts in Korea’s history. It’s a beautiful place to go to when you’re looking for a quiet space. I love to stay at temples just to sit and zone out.

It’s you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature and fruit, Jeju is the place to be. It’s only 30 minutes away from Korea by plane and they have cheap planes going here almost every hour or so!

Having just walked inside form this gross and dreary day, this was definitely the spot to read about! It looks gorgeous. The fruit is so interesting looking. As you’ve probably picked up from my blog, I don’t like fruit, but I’d love to try it in the chocolate! I think that beautiful temple is definitely somewhere I’d want to be right now. It looks so serene. Definitely my favorite destination you’ve told us about so far!

This makes me miss warm weather so much. Jeje Island looked so beautiful and calming. The temples really interested me, and if I were to visit, I think I would be spending a lot of time in the temples just relaxing.

I was just discussing with my friends what my favorite fruit is and I think it might be oranges! So visiting Jeju island to try a hallabong seems like a must. I think the sweet desserts would be my favorite too, and you always do such a good jobs of describing everything that now I want to travel all over Korea to try it all!

Love fruits and trying new things so the hallabong is right up my alley. I also thought the surrounding water in the first picture looked so clear – much different from ocean water here. Based off of these posts I really hope South Korea promotes all it has to offer through it’s tourism campaign.
