Photoshop Practice Assignment
For the warm up assignment I first decided to use the Starbucks logo because as commercialized and common as it is, I still think it would be funny if I am able to juxtapose it with an image that we all could relate to as college students. When I think of Starbucks, my mind is right away transported to ground floor HUB and the long line of people waiting to get their daily caffeine fix. Thinking about the logo I first edited out the mermaid logo and the Starbucks writing. My aim is to somehow relate Starbucks with Penn State, so I decided to browse for Penn State logo and found the perfect one in the shape of a Nittany Lion head. I placed the logo smack dab in the middle and change its color to match the Starbucks green. I made the green darker so as to make it less identifiable with Starbucks. After thinking it through, I decided the best name for my new coffee shop logo is Nittany Coffee, it is simple yet catchy. Voila, and the logo is born. I think all Penn State students will be able to relate to this logo, be it bad or good.
Graphic Text
I first came across the quote “Say what you are thinking, not what you think you should say” on my Instagram and was directly taken aback by how true it is. People nowadays care about their image too much that sometimes they build a totally different persona of themselves. Saying complimentary thigns when you do not mean it is commonplace in our daily conversations. When thinking of public image, the core group that directly came to my mind are celebrities. Celebrities’ sayings are often scrutinized and criticized by the public mass. Now with the help of social media it is very easy for people to post hate comments about a particular celebrity, which will in turn affect their public image. All in all, it is very hard for celebrities to practice freedom of speech in fear of being bashed by the public.
For my project I decided to make a black and white collage of celebrity faces as a background. After collecting enough photographs I edited each photos with Photoshop, cropping out appropriate figures to match each other. From this task, I get to explore different layers and how to manipulate each one to suit my needs, be it in terms of transparency or placement. I chose the font KG Defying Gravity primarily because of its shape and visibility; the squares surrounding each letter gives a sense of boldness to each word. All the word “you” is yellow to give emphasize on the viewers. At first, my finished project did not have a pink rectangular layer, but I thought it was to plain and boring so I added the layer on. The layer made it easier to read the quote and it also brings a pop of color. I am very satisfied with my work and I hope my viewers will be able to relate to the quote the same way as I do.
